Douglas County Veterans Viewpoint:

March 8, 2015 —

Congratulations are in order for the city of Lebanon, following the completion and dedication of the Edward C. Allworth Veterans Home.

You may remember a few years back that Lebanon was narrowly chosen over Roseburg as the site of the second veterans home in Oregon. The first one is located in The Dalles.

The $40 million veterans home was completed thanks in part to Linn County voters passing a $12 million levy, funding the facility by a 2-1 margin.

The Edward C. Allworth Veterans Home is now hiring, providing not only quality care for veterans but also quality jobs and a boost to the local economy.

Roseburg should be next.

But nothing is certain in this world. Which is why I encourage all of you to contact your state senators, state representatives, and the Oregon Department of Veterans’ Affairs. Let them know that the veterans of Douglas County have waited long enough for this kind of quality care. That the City of Roseburg and Douglas County have waited long enough for this economic boost. That the time to secure funding and start construction is now.

Drop me an email at my address below if you need contact information to reach your senator or representative. The Oregon Department of Veterans’ Affairs can be reached at 1-800-828-8801.

And more information about Oregon Veterans Homes is readily available online at www.oregonveteranshomes.com.

One of the greatest blessings about writing a column about veterans is that I’m able to bring good people together. I have received many phone calls and emails from people who need help and people offering to help others, whether it is families and friends assembling care packages for Roseburg’s Charlie Company of the Oregon National Guard, volunteers organizing Veterans Day parades and remembrances, or good-hearted people looking for a place to make a charitable contribution.

Dirk Kruysman from the Douglas County Veterans Forum shared an opportunity for people to donate to something lasting and worthy. You may not be aware of it, but there is a war memorial in front of the Douglas County Courthouse that lists the names of Douglas County residents who gave their lives in service for our country.

Dirk informed me that DCVF is taking donations to have a memorial marker installed on the courthouse lawn that will raise awareness of the memorial.

“We are halfway to our $1,500 goal,” said Kruysman. “Many veterans and groups have already donated. It would be nice for the rest of the public to have an opportunity to contribute to this beautiful marker.”

To make a donation, contact Dirk at 541-672-4392 or send your check to him in care of the DCVF, P.O. Box 1124, Roseburg, OR 97470.

God bless our veterans and God bless America.

John McDonald, a member of the Oregon National Guard, is president of the Douglas County Veterans Forum and a member of the Douglas County Veterans Advisory Committee, the Patrick W. Kelley VFW Post 2468 and the Earle B. Stewart American Legion Post 16. He’s a combat veteran of Operation Desert Storm with more than 15 years of military service.
