60th Anniversary: Okonek, Don and GayleAugust 3, 2015 —
Okoneks have shared 60 years
Don and Gayle (Salquist) Okonek of Tri City recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. A celebration party for family and friends was held in 2005 to honor the Okoneks’ 50th anniversary. To further celebrate their 60th, the couple will enjoy a delayed getaway to Crater Lake Lodge.
Gayle Salquist attended a one-room schoolhouse until she completed eighth grade. When she and a childhood friend, Barry, moved up to Spooner High School in Wisconsin, he introduced her to Don Okonek. Don and Gayle both graduated in 1950 and were married July 16, 1955, at United Methodist Church of Spooner. Barry served as Don’s best man at the wedding.
As newlyweds, the Okoneks relocated from the upper Midwest to the Pacific Northwest and settled in Days Creek, Oregon. During Don’s service in the U.S. Army, he and Gayle lived in Germany for two years, then returned to southern Oregon to raise their three sons.
Prior to retirement, Don worked for the Forest Service and then for Hanna Mining Company for 25 years, where he was active in the steel workers’ union. He was a den leader when his sons were in Webelos. After that, he was employed by the South Umpqua School District. Gayle taught school in Minneapolis, Berlingen, Germany and Days Creek. She later enjoyed a long career as an elementary school teacher in Tri City.
Don is an avid outdoorsman, and took his sons on many hunting and fishing expeditions that included camping and trekking throughout southern Oregon.
For nearly 30 years, Gayle has enjoyed entering items in the Douglas County Fair. She’s won many ribbons for her pastels and watercolors, as well as for her baking and canning skills.
The Okoneks have lived in Douglas County for 57 years and have three sons. Pat and his wife, Marilyn, live in Palatine, Illinois; Chris resides at Crater Lake; and Tony is in Medford. The couple also have seven grandsons, ranging in age from 14 to 25.
