They ate bugs, slept on the ground and lived among enemies. Now, two cast members from the television show "Survivor: All-Stars" will share details of their experiences at a Roseburg fund-raiser in November.
"It's great entertainment," organizer Bev Heyer said about the series. "I don't watch a lot of reality TV, but I do watch this."
Heyer and other community leaders are hosting the "Survival Beach Bash!" at the Douglas County Fairgrounds Nov. 13 to raise money for the future skate/bike park in Winston. General admission tickets go on sale July 1. The party will feature contestants Rupert Boneham and Rudy Boesch.
Although neither Boneham nor Boesch won the competition earlier this spring, Boneham received $1 million when viewers voted him as their favorite player in a subsequent episode. Boneham had also participated in the "Survivor: Pearl Islands" show, while Boesch was a member of the first program, "Survivor: Borneo."
On a whim, Heyer said she called Boneham in Indianapolis, and his answering machine gave her the number of his agent. Two hours later, the agent returned Heyer's call and contract talks began. The agent also secured Boesch for the fund-raiser.
Heyer, a Winston city councilor, said the event will include a seafood cioppino dinner, challenges, rewards and talks from the celebrities. The terms of the contract prohibit her from revealing how much Boneham and Boesch will be paid. She did stress that public funds are not being used and their fees will be funded from event proceeds.
The purpose of the fund-raiser is to aid with construction of a 13,000-square-foot skate/bike park behind Winston City Hall. The project, which will cost about $325,000, is expected to require little maintenance because of the amount of steel that will be used.//

To keep the area inviting, benches and a gazebo will be built and trees and flowers will be planted on adjoining property. The project is being managed by Dreamland Skateparks, a skateboard park design company that has worked on parks from Klamath Falls to Austria.
Several area skateboarders and bikers are also lending their voice to the design of the park, and they are hosting various fund-raisers throughout the year to help cover costs.
Heyer said the park's groundbreaking is planned for next spring or early summer. She estimates in-kind donations will help reduce the price by about $100,000, and she hopes to earn about $80,000 from the beach bash event.

Kaleb Pierce of Green said he's looking forward to the fund-raiser, and he encourages people to attend. He's said he's glad the proceeds will be donated to the skate/bike park -- a place he says kids both need and want.
"(We need it) so that like kids can have fun, like over the summer and stuff and stay out of trouble," said Pierce, an 11-year-old skateboarder. "(Skateboarding) is fun."
Heyer predicts the fund-raiser will be well received by the community, and she hopes people will attend to both have fun and to support a great cause.
"If you are a 'Survivor' fan, you'll be there," she said. "If you are a 'Survivor' fan, you'll give up cigarettes for a month to go to this."
