Former Roseburg man heads to Asia for Peace Corps hitch

Ryan Schuchard, a former Roseburg resident, has volunteered for a two-year contract with the Peace Corps. The assignment will enable him to serve as a business education teacher in the Central Asian Kyrgyz Republic, also known as Kyrgyzstan.

His primary responsibility, made possible through the Sustainable Economic Development Program, will be teaching business at a university. Secondary projects will include the development and participation in non-governmental organizations, such as health education and information technology.

A 2000 graduate of Oregon State University, Schuchard said he is looking forward to bringing Western strategies to the recently opened market of Kyrgyzstan. He's also hoping to build opportunities for outdoor tourism in the ski industry.

"Whatever happens, I have been drawn to the Peace Corps service for a long time and for a myriad of reasons," he said. "My experience with the Peace Corps will surely be a great professional springboard, regardless of which direction it steers me."

After completing his two years of service, Schuchard said he sees himself returning to school to earn a masters degree in sustainable international development or Russian/Central Asian development.

While on assignment in Kyrgyzstan, Schuchard will be maintaining a Web journal chronicling his experiences. To check on his progress and to obtain information about Central Asia and the Kyrgyz Republic, go to www.geocities.com/ryanschuchard or e-mail him at ryanschuchard@yahoo.com he News-Review
