OnBiz: Truckers, travelers get shot of Love's

A great big sign with multiple hearts announces the latest gas and grub stop along Interstate 5. As petrol stations go, the new Love's Travel Stops & Country Stores, which opens Thursday, is pretty deluxe.

Love's, off Grant Smith Road at Exit 119, is a 7,260-square-foot facility including an Arby's restaurant and a T.J. Cinnamon's counter. The $5 million travel center is the first Oregon location for Oklahoma City-based Love's, which has 155 centers nationwide.

Car and truck traffic will access the 24-hour travel and fueling center via two turnoffs from Grant Smith Road.

The center will employ about 45 people in both full- and part-time positions.

HIGH DEMAND: While the opening of Lowe's Home Improvement Warehouse in north Roseburg is several weeks off, applications have been flooding in for jobs at Douglas County's newest "big box" retailer.

The local store has received 3,000 applications for about 160 positions at the 116,000-square-foot store, according to a spokeswoman for North Carolina-based Lowe's. She said the store will employ 160 people during peak seasons, such as spring and summer. The store is expected to have about 120 workers, roughly three-quarters of which will be full time, during off-peak seasons.

NEW ROADHOUSE: The makeover of La Hacienda in Roseburg is complete. The renovated restaurant, which opened Saturday, is now Quicksilver Steak & Roadhouse.

Mark Vincent, who has owned the restaurant at 940 N.W. Garden Valley Blvd. for 24 years, decided it was time to take a new approach. Quicksilver features a separate room for video poker machines, and extra room for the sports bar and pool tables.

Hours for the lottery lounge are 7 a.m. to 2:30 a.m., while the restaurant is open from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 9 p.m. Sunday. The hours are subject to change, Vincent said.

Information: 672-5330.

A LITTLE BIT COUNTRY: Another steakhouse, Neon Moon Steakhouse, opened about a week ago in Sutherlin.

The restaurant is located at 204 W. Central Ave., former site of Los Dos Amigos. Owner Eric Ash said Neon Moon will be opening a bar as soon as the license is secured. The country-themed bar will have dancing, pool tables and other games.

Restaurant hours are 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Thursday, 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and noon to 8 p.m. Sunday.

Information: 459-1850.

COMING TO CALLAHAN: Four cottages are being built next to Callahan Village Assisted Living Community, 1801 N.W. Garden Valley Blvd., in Roseburg.

The cottages, on the west side of the Callahan Village and Callahan Court complex, will be two-bedroom apartments designed for retirees, said Darlene Hall, administrator for Callahan Village. Cottage residents will be provided one meal daily at the Village as well as housekeeping and emergency services. The cottages will have monthly rent, and there's no buy-in fee.

Callahan Village Assisted Living currently has 76 residents in its 71 apartments. The new apartments will open this summer. Information: 673-4500.

NEW DIGS FOR CHARLEY: The smell of wood-smoked barbecue will soon be wafting from a building on Harvard Avenue in Roseburg.

Charley Romani and his wife, Sarai, originally stationed Charley's Barbecue in a renovated espresso cart at the Kmart parking lot on Stewart Parkway.

Business has been so good that Charley's is expanding into a sit-down restaurant, complete with red-and-white checkered curtains and wood chairs and tables, at 812 Harvard Ave.

Romani said he hopes to open the restaurant, with seating for 60, by next weekend. The Romanis will continue to offer catering. Hours are planned to be 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Information: 957-1786.
