<b>SUMMER ARTS FESTIVAL</b> -- June 25-27. The county's biggest arts show unfolds with about 120 artists' booths spread across the grounds of the Umpqua Valley Arts Center in Roseburg. Live music over the years has ranged from Celtic to blues to jazz. Furniture makers, painters, potters, wood carvers, jewelry makers, country crafters and more display their works while a small caravan of food vendors offer a variety of entrees, snacks, beverages and desserts. <b>RIDDLE SAWDUST JUBILEE</b> -- July 2-4. This annual Fourth of July celebration boasts south Douglas County's largest fireworks display and a model airplane display. <b>GRAFFITI WEEK</b> -- July 7-11. Roseburg flashes back to the 1950s and early '60s for this celebration, patterned after the car-crazy youths in the film "American Graffiti." <b>OCEAN FESTIVAL</b> -- July 16-18. The sea takes center stage for this coastal celebration in Reedsport and Winchester Bay. Enjoy the Bayside Bazaar, a three-block area filled with arts, crafts, collectibles, food and more in Winchester Bay. A Grand Parade at noon on Saturday in Reedsport is an annual tradition. There are handmade quilts, a paintball tournament and always a fabulous seafood barbecue and plenty of classic, vintage and muscle cars on display by the Kool Coastal Cruisers. <b>MYRTLE CREEK SUMMER ARTS FESTIVAL</b> -- July 22-24. Area artists get to showcase their works while strollers enjoy parades and displays of lumberjack power at Millsite Park. This year's festival will include a show-and-shine car event, an arm wrestling contest and fireworks. <b>DUNEFEST</b> -- July 28-Aug. 1. Thousands of ATV enthusiasts are drawn to Winchester Bay, the heart of the Oregon Dunes, for drag races, TSD rally, poker run and more. In addition to all the action on the sand, there are vendor booths, food, music and exhibitions featuring the latest products and vehicles. <b>NORTH DOUGLAS COUNTY FAIR</b> -- July 29-31. An old-fashioned country fair will be celebrated in the historic timber community of Drain. Music, food, crafts and dance are planned at the Drain Civic Center with a parade at 11 a.m. Saturday. Past events have included a carnival, queen's coronation, pie auction, arts and crafts exhibits, live entertainment with area bands, merchants drawings and the Bill Levin Memorial Run. <b>DOUGLAS COUNTY FAIR</b> -- Aug. 10-14. Big-name entertainers pull in the crowds but people also flock to see what prizes friends and neighbors have gathered in livestock, floral, food, arts and land products competitions. <b>HIGHLAND CELTIC GAMES</b> -- Aug. 20-22. Bagpipe music and jigs await those who attend this celebration of Scottish, Welsh and Irish culture in Winston's Riverbend Park. Ethnic food, along with various competitions and games, will provide entertainment for the entire family. The National Senior Athletic Group will be featured at this year's games. 459-1600.
<b>SUTHERLIN BLACKBERRY FESTIVAL</b> -- Aug. 20-22. This year's festival kicks off on Friday night with a cruise-in dance and barbecue. There is a car show and cruise on Saturday and mud races on Sunday. The festival features a variety of entertainment, a blackberry cooking contest, a chili cook-off, BMX bike races, diaper derby, Saturday night cruise, a motorcycle show, mud volleyball, swap meet and a car raffle. <b>OBON FESTIVAL</b> -- Aug. 21. The Obon is a traditional Japanese festival that celebrates family ancestry and deceased relatives, not unlike Mexico's Dia de Los Muertos. Sponsored by the Roseburg Sister Cities organization, the celebration includes traditional Japanese music, Japanese food, displays and demonstrations, dance, crafts and storytelling, much of it from Roseburg's sister city of Shobu, Japan. <b>SMITH RIVER COUNTRY FAIR</b> -- Aug. 22. Old-fashioned family fun is a tradition at this annual event at this community near Reedsport. Kids love the greased pig chase, chicken scramble, sack race and egg toss. A traditional pit barbecue beef dinner is served at noon. Giant vegetable contest, exhibits and a raffle round out the day. <b>CANYONVILLE PIONEER DAYS</b> -- Aug. 26-29. Old-fashioned, small-town fun is the backbone for this community event held at Pioneer Park, now in its 38th consecutive year. Past Pioneer Days have offered barbecues and pie auctions, cake walks and bingo, a parade, car shows, frog jumps, tugs of war, an antiques and collectibles show and dances. <b>KOOL COASTAL NIGHTS</b> -- Aug. 27-28. <b>OREGON STATE BLUEGRASS FESTIVAL</b> -- Aug. 27-29. Bluegrass lovers from all over Oregon and the Pacific Northwest gather at Riverbend Park in Winston to listen and jam to this unique style of American music. Last year at least seven bands were scheduled to play. There was an open mic night as well as a band scramble where local musicians competed for a cash prize. <b>ELKTON FORT UMPQUA DAYS</b> -- Sept. 4-5. A Saturday morning parade marks the beginning of a two-day celebration of country life. Featured are crafts and food booths, art show, games, frontier encampment, local demonstrations, music, butterfly life cycle and a historical pageant "Echoes of the Umpqua." <b>WINSTON-DILLARD MELON FESTIVAL</b> -- Sept. 10-12. Dillard's claim to fame used to be its melon production. Today, contestants face off face-down in a contest to see who can swallow the most melon chunks, a tribute to past glory days. <b>TSALILA, UMPQUA RIVER FESTIVAL</b> -- Sept. 18-19. Pronounced "sa-lee-la," this festival is part entertainment, part education and lots of fun. It is held downtown at the Umpqua River and Discovery Center with activities focused on watershed restoration and salmon recovery. A complete traditional Indian village is set up with tribal drumming, dancing, storytelling and demonstrations of flintknapping and other native crafts by the Confederated Tribes of Siuslaw, Coos and Lower Umpqua Indians. <b>FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS</b> -- Traditionally open Thanksgiving through New Year's, this annual holiday light festival brightens the area at River Forks Park, six miles west of Roseburg. The lighting display has over 300,000 lights and 75 animated displays, including a giant American flag, nativity, prehistoric animals and more. This is the largest volume light display in the Northwest. Funds have been used for the 2002 Capitol Holiday Tree project, Rotary Club community projects and scholarship funds. 672-3469.
