Basil Montgomery Johnson

JOHNSON, Basil Montgomery-Age 60, of Roseburg, Oregon, went home to be with his Lord on Monday, April 7, 2003. He was born September 29, 1942, in Goodland, Kansas, to Basil and Ruth (Snyder) Johnson. Basil was raised in Wichita, Kansas. He attended Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas, earning a bachelors degree in history and political science in 1964. Basil received a masters degree in social work from the University of Illinois in Champagne/Urbana in 1966. Basil enlisted in the U.S. Army and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant. He served in the 9th Division, IV Corps during the Vietnam Conflict. Basil was discharged three years later as Captain in the Medical Services Corps. Basil received a doctor of philosophy in professional psychology from the United States International University in San Diego, California in 1977. He was employed as a social planning consultant by the Bay Area Social Planning Council and then obtained employment as a medical social worker at the U.S. Public Health Service Hospital for one year. He was offered the position of Special Assistant to the Deputy Director, National Commission on Marijuana and Drug Abuse in Washington, D.C. Basil then worked with Santa Barbara Mental Health, first as a program coordinator of an adult day treatment center and then for another year as the program manager of North County After Care for post hospitalized patients. He then was employed by Santa Barbara County Parole and Probation as the Court Psychologist. In 1979, he moved to Roseburg where he was employed as a Forensic Psychologist for the Douglas County Mental Health until he retired in 1999. Following his retirement, he worked as a private consultant. On November 5, 1982, in Roseburg, he married Gerry Heichel and was blessed to be part of her children's lives. Basil loved his family above all and enjoyed all the activities of a large family. He also enjoyed arranging family outings, being a computer guru, antiquing, going to estate sales and traveling around Oregon. Survivors include his wife, Gerry Johnson of Roseburg; sons, Rocky Johnson of Bend, Oregon; Gavin Johnson of Roseburg; his children by marriage, daughters and their families, Fawnda and Todd Thompson of Springfield, Oregon; Marva and Brian Culberson of Roseburg; Rena and Mark Palomares of Sutherlin; Robyn Bryant and Marc Owen of Springfield; Rawna Heichel of Santa Rosa, California; sons and their families, Bartton and Kelly Heichel; Rendy Heichel and Lynn Anderson, all of Roseburg; mother, Ruth Johnson of Wichita, Kansas; sisters, Julana Hepner of Denton, Texas; and Christina Johnson of Wichita; and 12 grandchildren. Basil was preceded in death by an infant brother, Larry Johnson and his father, Basil, in January of 2003. Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 12, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. in the Roseburg Christian Alliance Church. Pastor Dennis Pust will officiate. Interment will follow within the grounds of Roseburg Memorial Gardens. Those who wish, may pay their respects on Friday, April 11, 2003, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at WILSON'S CHAPEL OF THE ROSES who is in charge of the arrangements. Basil valued education and the one job he had not yet completed in life was getting Gavin through school. In lieu of flowers, an educational fund has been established for Gavin Johnson at Umpqua Bank.
