Local Art & Art Galleries

<b>LOCAL ART</b>

The Umpqua Valley Arts Association offers much to the community in terms of cultural and artistic opportunities during the summer months.

The annual Summer Arts Festival, held on the grounds of the Arts Center at 1624 W. Harvard Ave. in Roseburg, draws thousands of people every year. Hundreds of artists and a wide array of foods, beverages and entertainment in many forms have made this a Douglas County tradition.

This year's festival is June 25 to 27.

Many art shows are also featured in the center's Hallie Ford Gallery this summer:

<b>"Car Talk"</b> -- The show will feature car art, illustrating Americans' love affair with the automobile. The opening reception will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. June 4, and the show will run through July 9.

<b>"Art about Wine"</b> -- Features art about wine and reflects the region's bountiful vineyards. The opening reception is from 5 to 7 p.m. on July 16, and the show will run through Aug. 5.

<b>"The Importance of Being Susan"</b> -- The show highlights a variety of art by artists named Susan. The opening reception is from 5 to 7 p.m. on Sept. 10, and the show will continue through Oct. 29.

<b>"Membership Show"</b> -- This will showcase art by members of the association. The opening reception is from 5 to 7 p.m. Nov. 5, and it runs through Dec. 24.

The Umpqua Valley Arts Association is one of 12 regional coordinators for Arts In Education, the nationally, state- and privately funded program that places professional artists in schools throughout the county, giving students and teachers a "hands-on" experience in all types of arts.

The association manages the Umpqua Valley Arts Center and maintains three galleries. Besides the Hallie Brown Ford Gallery, the Gallery II and the new Red Gallery are used to stage smaller exhibits. Also housed in the Arts Center is the Gift Gallery, offering one-of-a-kind gifts made by a large variety of Oregon artists.

In addition, the association provides classes, workshops, an arts information library, recitals, cultural meeting rooms and an information outlet. Hands-on instruction is available at the pottery studio adjacent to the arts center's parking lot, and numerous art programs are offered for children of all ages.
