Do you think near-death experiences exist?

"Everyone has read or heard personally of someone who claims that they died and saw heaven, then came back to life. When I hear these stories, I automatically question it. But would the people lie? Surely they do not totally make up a story, but how do you know that they did not dream it, or hallucinate it?

It also depends on what the definition of a 'near-death experience' is, as to whether it is possible or not. If it is to have the heart stop beating, then these do exist.

There are many instances when a patient's heart ceases to pump, and doctors are able to revive the person soon enough. But if the definition is for the brain to stop functioning, this is not possible. The truth is, no one can truly know if these experiences exist unless they live through it themselves."

Lacey Bitter, senior, Roseburg High School

"First off, I must say I believe in near-death experiences because I trust there is a higher power that controls all of what goes on spiritually and mentally.

If you are dying, it has to be impossible for a chemical reaction to bring forward a glowing ball of light, blinding to the eyes. It is only the first stage to reaching what is unknown. From what I've heard and seen on TV, those people who do have a near-death experience say you just know when something powerfully real is about to happen.

A chemical reaction shouldn't even be happening if you are already crossing over. I believe that is only the first stage to reaching the final destination."

Ashley Bryson, sophomore Roseburg High School

"I would say that probably everyone in their lifetime has wondered what near-death experiences are like. But do they really exist?

First, what exactly are near-death experiences? How can you define them really? How I would define them would be as maybe a bright light at the end of a tunnel with God standing in the light. Or maybe a near-death experience could be defined as your spirit hovering over your dead body. There's a lot of examples of what some people say they've experienced. Some claim they've seen their life flash before their eyes when they were in a near-death situation.

A book written by Dr. John Cleveland titled 'Dancing with God' tells a story about 237 people who claim they have had a near-death experience. The book tells about what happened with each individual. Some say they had an actual conversation with God in their experience.

I believe that near-death experiences do exist. I think it might depend on what you believe in. I think if you are religious, you're probably more likely to believe in spiritual events taking place."
