The News-Review and the Roseburg Kiwanis Club are once again sponsoring the Douglas County Spelling Bee on Saturday, April 23, 2005 at Wildlife Safari. Below are study words for the 2005 Bee. Words will appear every Monday on the Schools Page. The County Spelling Bee champion will go home with a trophy and new computer system. Trophies and prizes will also be awarded through fourth place.
All districts, private schools, and home schooled students in the fifth through eighth grades are invited to participate. Students wishing to enter elimination rounds in their district need to sign up with their school's spelling bee coordinator. Home schooled students should contact the Home School Spelling Bee Coordinator at 679-1251.

<b>SPELLING WORDS:
schottische.</b> A round dance in duple measure characterized by gliding and hopping steps and similar to but slower than the polka. “After an hour of dancing the schottische, Ed and Sarah wearily headed for the soda machine.”
<b>whiffle.</b> Emit or produce a light whistling or puffing sound. “Bernie heard the ball whiffle as he threw it toward first base.”
<b>zigzaggedness.</b> The quality or state of having short sharp turns or angles. “An aerial photograph revealed the zigzaggedness of the mountain road.”
<b>aspartame.</b> A noncarbohydrate crystalline compound that is formed from the amino acids phenylalanine and aspartic acid and is used as a low-calorie sweetener. “Since Bertha began her diet, she prefers soft drinks that are sweetened with aspartic.”
<b>discalced.</b> Unshod, barefooted. “The discalced runner became a celebrity at the Olympics.”
<b>haberdasher.</b> A dealer in men's furnishings (as shirts, ties, hats). “Fred's grandfather was a haberdasher on the Lower East Side.”
<b>rasgado. </b>The arpeggio effect produced by sweeping the strings with the thumb in guitar playing. “Rod ended his guitar solo with a resounding rasgado.”
<b>unfastidious.</b> Untidy, careless. “Dorian became unfastidious in his appearance after he broke up with his girlfriend.”
<b>untenantable.</b> Incapable of being occupied or lived in. “The hurricane left thousands of homes untenantable.”
<b>edelweiss</b>. A small perennial herb growing high in the Alps. “Iva recognized the edelweiss by its distinctive white petals.”
<b>linnet.</b> A common small Old World finch. “Tommy spotted a green linnet in the orchard.”
<b>aperitif.</b> An alcoholic drink (as a cocktail or glass of appetizer wine) often taken before a meal. “Tilda sipped an aperitif while waiting for her salad.”
<b>cerography. </b>The art of making characters or designs in or with wax. “In cerography a stylus is used to cut the desired designs in wax.”
<b>modificative.</b> Something that serves to make minor changes in the form or structure of. “To thicken the runny sauce, Hester used flour as the modificative ingredient.”
<b>effervescently.</b> In a bubbling or exuberant manner. “Jill greeted her schoolmates effervescently over the loudspeaker.”
<b>gossamer.</b> A delicate silk veiling resembling gauze. “The debutante wore a gossamer shawl.”
<b>fianchetto.</b> In a chess game to the position Knight 2. “The analysts correctly predicted that Evangeline would fianchetto her bishop.”
<b>plantar</b>. Of, relating to, or typical of the sole of the foot. “Ted's new sneakers provide cushion support for the plantar area of his foot.”
<b>quinsyberry.</b> An Old World black currant. “Edgar mashed a quinsyberry on his sister's new yellow dress.”
<b>oligophrenic.</b> Of, relating to, or exhibiting mental deficiency. “The test was designed to reveal any oligophrenic tendencies, but many questioned its value.”
<b>smorgasbord.</b> A luncheon or supper buffet offering a variety of foods and dishes. “Nita's smorgasbord included turkey and smoked salmon.”
<b>cynegetics.</b> The art of hunting. “The rare book collection contains a medieval treatise on cynegetics.”
<b>coalescence.</b> A growing together or union in one body, form or group. “Rain is the result of the coalescence of water droplets within a cloud.”
<b>idiosyncratically.</b> In a manner peculiar to the individual. “Because Emily Dickinson wrote so idiosyncratically, her poems are immediately recognizable.”
<b>interlucent.</b> Shining or glowing between or in the midst of other things. “The prisms on the chandelier reflected the interlucent candles.”
<b>contrariety.</b> The quality or state of being in opposition or disagreement. “Amanda was becoming impatient with her two-year-old son's contrariety.”
<b>portmanteau.</b> A large traveling bag. “The clown removed an enormous pumpkin from a portmanteau.”
<b>fluoridation.</b> The adding of a binary compound of fluorine to drinking water. “Fluoridation has been proven to deter tooth decay.”
<b>fuchsia.</b> A plant of a genus of decorative shrubs with showy nodding flowers usually in deep pinks, reds and purples. “Every spring Cynthia hangs a gorgeous fuchsia by her front door.”
<b>jubilarian.</b> One that celebrates a jubilee commemorating personal service in a state of life or profession. “The parish gave the jubilarian a silver bowl.”
