Today marks the opening of the spring high school sports season, and that could spell bad news for local sun worshippers.
After four days of high temperatures last week that either set records or tied existing ones -- when the sports teams were practicing in preparation for this week's start of games and matches -- this week's forecast calls for cooler temperatures and wind.
Today's high in Roseburg should hit in the low to mid-60s, according to the National Weather Service in Medford. If so, that would be six to 10 degrees cooler than Sunday's high of 71. Although the high temperature is expected to remain above the average high for the date of 53 degrees, it will be accompanied by cooling winds of about 10 miles per hour, the Weather Service said.
Last week, records were set Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, with Tuesday's high of 74 degrees tying a record set a year earlier.
The high for the week was recorded on Friday, when thermometers registered 77 degrees. That shattered the old mark of 69 degrees, set in 1992. Thursday's high was 74, eclipsing by three degrees a record set in 1979. Wednesday's high temperature of 73 bounced the previous record of 70 degrees set in 1994.
Daytime temperatures for the next four days are expected to remain between 60 degrees and 65 degrees, the Weather Service said. Overnight lows are predicted between 35 degrees and 45 degrees.
Rain clouds are expected to move in toward the end of the week, with a chance of rain forecast for Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
