"When one becomes engaged to another person there really isn't jumping on sofas or outbursts about stress disorders, so this Tom Cruise/Katie Holmes engagement is raising red flags.
One issue that seems to arise with the proposal is the age difference. Cruise is 43 years old and Holmes is 26. But the real issue that needs to be addressed is that actors have to stoop to the level of public displays of affection, insinuations about possible relationships and marrying each other just to get some publicity about their movies. Cruise did nearly the same thing with his publicity partner, Penelope Cruz, in 'Vanilla Sky'.
Cruise and Holmes aren't the only ones to employ these techniques. Look at Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, for instance, and see the free publicity for 'Mr. and Mrs. Smith'. And it's only a matter of time before the latest 'Ben-ifer' frenzy starts up the publicity for Jennifer Garner's upcoming movie release. Then we can answer the earth-shattering question of whether this was literally a planned pregnancy."

"There is only one phrase that properly outlines my thoughts on this topic -- 'Celebrity marriages never last.'
Almost any celebrity marriage that one hears about always seems to end badly. Even those couples who really do love each other and are separately famous break up eventually. But marriages between two people who have an age difference of around twenty years usually do not last, even if the two people are not famous.
Tom Cruise has been known to get involved with women that are decidedly younger than him, and those relationships never last. So why should this relationship be any different? Besides, Katie Holmes is barely out of high school and she probably does not really even know fully what she is doing."

"It seems so often that celebrity marriages all have the same atmosphere about them. They tend to hold an atmosphere of temporary satisfaction of self. It is because of this that they are so often very short.
In fact, unfortunately most of today's marriages are built upon pleasure. When you ask a couple why they intend to marry, the most common answer is for love; however so few people really know what true love is.
Love is not simply a feeling, but a choice. Love means sacrifice, love means placing someone else before yourself. It means caring for and serving someone, even when you do not feel like it. Love is not simply an emotion. Although it brings tremendous emotion, it is so much more than that.
I have no idea what this marriage will be like or how long it will last. However, I do know what this marriage is based upon will make all the difference in the world."

"Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are just one more couple begging for the national spotlight. The American public was led on by the Ben/Jen affair which finally fell through the cracks, and now here is just one more thing to (grace) the front of newspapers and magazines.
Whether or not the marriage lasts 24 hours, or two months, the TV stations and tabloids have already made millions of dollars covering it, so they don't really care. That is the crazy part about all of these 'celebrity' relationships. There is really no permanent commitment involved, whatsoever.
It might be wise, before Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes get married, for them to consult Nicholas Cage and Lisa Marie Presley for some advice first of what not to do. That 'marriage' lasted a month-and-a-half. If Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes eventually do get married, I really hope that they break away from that pattern that has been set, and make their marriage what it was intended to be."
