After reading the article in the July 10, Parade Magazine on stem cell research, it appears that some say that without embryonic stem cells, we are depriving science of solutions to debilitating diseases.
But after two decades of research, embryonic stem cells have not helped a single human being. And they come with a hefty price tag: they are only obtained by destroying a living human embryo. An embryo who is just 270 days away from being someone's bouncing baby girl or boy.
Meanwhile, adult stem cells have helped thousands of people including patients with Parkinson's disease, spinal cord injury, sickle cell anemia, heart damage and many other conditions. And these stem cells are readily available, found in bone marrow, umbilical cord blood, skin, fat and other tissues and organs.
Adult stem cell research is finding solutions. Science does not have to kill in order to cure. Let's find cures we can all live with.
