Three hurt in Roseburg head-on collision

A head-on collision Saturday night on Southeast Stephens Street in Roseburg sent three people to the hospital.

Jose L. Ramirez, 34, of Roseburg was driving northbound near the 1800 block of the street around 10:25 p.m. when his 1988 Chevrolet van collided with a southbound vehicle, according to a Roseburg Police Department press release.

Janice L. Withrow, 50, of Roseburg was driving the southbound 1997 Plymouth sedan. Dalton Withrow, 13, of Roseburg, the driver's son, was the passenger.

Emergency crews had to use extrication equipment to pull both drivers from their vehicles.

They were transported to Mercy Medical Center and taken by Life Flight to Legacy Emanuel Hospital and Health Center in Portland.

A Legacy Emanuel spokesman said Ramirez was in good condition this morning and Withrow was in serious condition. Withrow's son was treated and released from Mercy.

Roseburg police Sgt. Aaron Dunbar said the accident is still under investigation. He said a witness called 911 just before the accident to report that Ramirez was driving his vehicle into parked cars in the parking lot at the Sugar Pine Inn tavern on Southeast Stephens Street.

Dunbar said it is not known if Ramirez had just left the tavern and police are waiting for the results of a blood alcohol test.

There was also an odor of alcohol in Ramirez's vehicle, he said.
