Garage sale to benefit ailing Winston barber

WINSTON -- A garage sale is set for Saturday to help a Winston man keep his business.

Dan Weaver of Winston, who owns The Hair Sawyer, has transverse myelitis, a neurological disorder caused by inflammation of the spinal cord.

The disorder has caused his legs to be numb, meaning he has lost his ability to walk, said his companion, Pauline Sloan of Winston. He could, however, regain the function in the future. He has also developed other medical problems, including low blood levels and pneumonia, Sloan said. Weaver is currently in critical condition at Mercy Medical Center.

The money raised from the garage sale will be used to help Weaver pay the utilities and rent for his barber shop while he's in the hospital. That way, he can possibly cut hair again, Sloan said. His health insurance is covering the majority of his medical expenses.

Weaver, 62, has been a barber in the Winston community for 28 years.

The garage sale will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Grandway Shopping Center.

Those interested in donating items for the garage sale should bring them to Farmer's Insurance Group, 127 N.W. Douglas Blvd. Cash donations are also being accepted at the Winston branch of PremierWest Bank, 40 N.W. Glenhart Ave.

Information: Penny Mills, 679-6197.
