A Roseburg woman and a 5-year-old girl were killed Monday night in a two-car crash on the southbound Interstate 5 bridge at Milepost 120.

The two victims, who were not identified, had been driving south in a green Honda Accord around 7:30 p.m. with another male when their car ran out of gas, according to witness and police reports.

The two adults got out to push, and as they were pushing their car in the slow lane of travel they were struck by a southbound white Ford Taurus driven by an unidentified man.

Circumstances surrounding the accident, including the amount of time the driver of the Taurus had to react to the disabled car, were still under investigation Monday night.

The woman died at the scene of the crash, and the girl was pronounced dead at Mercy Medical Center, according to Oregon State Police Lt. Doug Ladd.

The male occupant of the Honda was also taken to Mercy, but his condition was not available Monday. The other driver was not injured and remained on the scene after the accident to provide information to investigators.

He declined to speak to a reporter about the crash.

The accident blocked both lanes of southbound traffic for several hours, forcing the authorities to route southbound traffic around the crash via Old Highway 99 south.

One lane was expected to be reopened to traffic around midnight.

Canyonville resident David Adams arrived on scene immediately after the crash and tried to administer first aid to the victims. He first approached the male who had been pushing the car.

“First thing he said was, ‘What happened,’” said Adams, as he sat against a cement freewat barrier waiting for traffic to resume.

Adams said the woman never regained consciousness after the impact, and though he tried to help her she died shortly after the crash.

“The little girl was still in the car,” Adams said. “She was pinned between the two front seats.”

Adams summoned some construction workers who approached the scene to help him move the wreckage so they could pull her out, but she was trapped. They watched helplessly as an ambulance in the northbound lane was unable to reach them and had to find another way to the crash site.

The crash investigation will continue Tuesday morning.
