Is finding a date on Internet a safe thing to do?

"I think online dating is only as safe as people allow it to be. Obviously, people should not submit their personal information -- such as address or phone number, but I see no harm in chatting with another single individual online.

I understand that there are risks in this sort of interaction, but there are always risks that people must take in meeting new people and having new experiences. I don't think that it is any more dangerous when you cannot actually see somebody.

A person cannot always justify another's motive simply by looking at them, and if so, that is a shallow life led. However, if people desire to interact with written words rather than verbal words, then so be it. I think that with the right precautions online dating is perfectly safe."

"Modern society is so filled with sick and demented perverts that I can not see how Internet dating could be safe. The inherent problems with dating over the Internet, and conversing with someone you cannot see, is that you do not know if the information they are giving you is truthful.

Dating Internet Web sites often have members post a picture and write a paragraph or two about themselves; identification is not requested. A registered sex offender can easily find his next victim on the Web site.

With Internet dating, you can not be sure about a person's true personality, religion, or even gender. Furthermore, you are unable to know the person's age.

A teenager who thinks he is talking to someone of similar age, could in fact, be talking to a 40-year-old man; a man, who quite possibly, might want to arrange a meeting with the other and commit an evil deed. It might be rare, but it happens. In conclusion, I think that traditional dating is both a safer and more effective way of finding a partner."

"Online dating is a virtual way for individuals who express a common interest to correspond -- whether it be nationwide or around the globe. Many who take part in this practice are usually seeking to find someone who they might eventually meet or even come to marry.

Since the beginning of online dating 10 years ago, persona l safety has always been one of the major concerns of this practice.

Various people believe that virtual dating is a relatively safe way of meeting people that are not in your immediate area. Even as safe as it can be, by not using it the right way, many people can fall into the trap that can result into identity theft.

The Federal Trade Commission's 2003 report on identity theft called it the fastest growing crime in the nation, with nearly 500,000 victims, costs to businesses of $48 billion and costs to consumers of nearly $5 billion.

Many of these victims were involved in online dating. Staying safe using online dating should not be too difficult. It is important to use the same common sense that you would bring into play in meeting an individual face to face."

"With the growth of the Internet, there are many new and interesting possibilities for online dating -- but how safe are these Web sites?

The answer is that they are really quite safe. Many sites have in place safeguards that prevent interested parties from seeing one's personal information. Many ask the user to pay money, so that this eliminates people who post a profile just for fun.

Dating sites take into consideration safety. There are many sites out on the Internet that show a so-called 'step by step process,' telling about how to keep one's self secure when participating in online dating and then when meeting their date in person.

It is good to have variety in one's dating experience. Variety in dating means not to just hide behind a computer screen, but to also join community clubs, volunteer and try a class to meet people with like-minded interests.

Dating online is a good thing when used in small portions, and will never replace the connection one feels when meeting someone face to face."
