A 2002 Roseburg High School graduate about to begin her senior year at Oregon State University was killed in a car accident in Los Angeles Tuesday.

Kate Stone, 21, is being remembered by friends and family as a strong person, both in stature and personality.

“She could do anything physical and enjoyed doing it,” said her father, Jamie Stone. “Anything new and different that was a challenge, she loved to pursue that type of stuff.”

Kate Stone was working in Los Angeles for the summer, living with her grandfather. She was an office assistant for her uncle’s back surgery practice, part of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

Staying close to family was important to her, according to her father. He said that the outpouring of support from friends has also shown what their daughter meant to others.

The family lives in the close-knit Laurelwood neighborhood. News of Kate Stone’s accident, which Jamie Stone said the family still has few details about, was posted on a neighborhood Web site.

Family and friends have been flying in to pay their respects.

“Somebody even called from a plane on the way to Europe,” Jamie Stone said. “The local support and outpouring, as usual in a town like this, has just been phenomenal.”

Funeral services are being planned for next week, but the date and location have not yet been set.

Jamie Stone, speaking on behalf of his daughter’s friends, said Kate believed that staying in shape physically kept her strong mentally.

Kate Stone’s athletic prowess was evident in high school, playing for the Roseburg volleyball and track teams. She still has a pole vault listed among the high school’s top 10 of all time, according to News-Review records. Kate Stone and her sister Allison recently ran a half-marathon in San Diego. She is also survived by her mother Terri and brother Taylor.

She was about to begin her senior year at OSU, studying nutrition. Her father said Kate was already lining up possible graduate schools and planned to begin the application process for them soon.

Jamie Stone said Kate planned to become a registered dietitian and wanted to work in sports and nutrition.

“She loved to laugh and loved to dream,” he said.
