Richard Lyle Cross

Cross, Richard Lyle " Age 71, of Tenmile, Oregon, went home to be with the Lord on September 15, 2005. He was born November 3, 1933 along with his identical twin, Don Cross in Brinsmaid, North Dakota to Raymond and Della Ann Cross. At the age of seventeen, he enlisted in the military after the company he had been working for went out of business. After about a week of basic training he said, "What have I gotten myself into?" While in the service he drove trucks hauling heavy equipment. He traveled to France, Germany, Switzerland, Rome, and saw many wonderful sights. After serving his country and receiving an honorable discharge; he moved to Roseburg, Oregon where he met his soul mate, Lucille Caskey. He was a member of Lumber and Sawmill Workers Union, Local Number 2949, while working as a millwright. He went back to college and worked his way up to a Master Mechanic position, becoming a company man for Roseburg Lumber Company. He was a hard worker and a dedicated employee for 43 years before retiring in 1995. He is survived by his wife, Lucille Cross, of Tenmile, four children: Sandi McClung of Springfield, Oregon, Randall Cross and his wife, Nancy of Roseburg, Norma Fields and her husband, Robert of Winston, and Lyle Cross and his wife, Janet of Winston. Also surviving are ten grandchildren: Steve Cross, Teresa Holstrom, Rick Cook, Jana Hawkins, Randall Cross, Tim Cook, Travis Cook, Kyle Cross, Brian Cross, and Trampas Fields, as well as twenty great-grandchildren. He leaves brothers and sisters: Raymond Cross and his wife, LaWanda of Sweethome, Oregon, Evelyn Meeks and her husband, Glenn of Roseburg, Lois Finnie and her husband, John of Roseburg, Norma King and her husband, Jim of Roseburg, Gary Cross and his wife, Donna of Roseburg, Bonnie LaBonte of Portland, Oregon, Rhonda Uliano and her husband, Steve, of Roseburg, Steve Cross of California, Pat Cross and family of Winston, plus numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Della Cross, brothers: his identical twin, Donald and Ronald and Robert Cross. Funeral services will be held at the Vine Street Baptist Church in Roseburg on Tuesday, September 20, 2005, at 11:00 am. Interment will follow at Roseburg Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Friends may pay their respects on Monday, September 19, 2005 from 1 pm to 5 pm at Taylor's Family Chapel.

Chester 'Chet' Carl Smith

SMITH, Chester 'Chet' Carl " Age 84, of Roseburg, Oregon, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday September 15, 2005. He was born December 17, 1920 in Keno, Oregon to Cecil R. and Mabel A. (Southard) Smith. Chet was raised and attended school in Portland, Oregon. He moved to the Roseburg area in the early 1950's. Chet worked for many years for Pacific Power and Light in many capacities until he retired as a service dispatcher in 1983. On September 10, 1980 in Roseburg he married Thelma Stubblefield. Chet was a member of the Intemational Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Moose Lodge, the Retreads Motorcycle group and Vine Street Baptist Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf and riding motorcycles. Survivors include his wife Thelma Smith of Roseburg; son, Phillip Smith and his wife, Wendy of Seaside, Oregon; stepchildren, Bruce Stubblefield and his wife, Susan of Grants Pass, Oregon; Daryl Stubblefield and his wife, Janet of Roseburg, Oregon; Stan Stubblefield and his wife, Teresa of Eugene, Oregon and Duane Stubblefield and his wife, Lisa of Sunriver, Oregon; ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Chet was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Merle and a brother, Richard. Funeral services will be held Monday September 19, 2005 at 1:00 pm at Vine Street Baptist Church. Pastor Rick Hahn will officiate. Private interment will follow within the grounds of Rosehurg Memorial Gardens. Those who wish may pay their respects on Sunday, September 18, 2005 from 1:00 pm until 4:00 pm at Wilson's Chapel of the RoseS, who is in charge of arrangements.

Beulah May Holmes

HOLMES, Beulah May (Carpenter) " Age 75, of Roseburg, Oregon, passed away on September 14, 2005. Beulah was born on March 18, 1930, in Chehalis, Washington, to Edwin and Hazel Carpenter. On January 31, 1953, Beulah was married to Carl D. Holmes. Beulah is survived by her loving husband of 52 years Carl, and two children, Carla D. Rowland-Shirley and her husband, Donald Shirley of Roseburg; and W. Dennis Holmes and his wife, Shellie Holmes of Sutherlin, Oregon. Beulah is also survived by her sister, Phyllis Stevenson of Marysville, Washington; two sisters-in-law, Genell Kinsel and her husband, Leonard of Roseburg and Janie Guthrie and her husband, Bill of Roseburg. Beulah had one grandchild, Garrett D. Rowland, who was the apple of her eye; four step-grandson's, Luke A. Shirley; Brett A. Whiting; Tyler S. Whiting; and Mitchell K. Whiting, all of Roseburg. Beulah was preceded in death by her parents, Edwin and Hazel and four siblings, Grace Wood; Phyllis Stevenson; Wendle Carpenter; and Lawrance Carpenter, who passed away as a child. Beulah was an active member and Deaconess of The First Christian Church on Kane St. in Roseburg and an outstanding volunteer at Mercy Medical Center for over twenty-two years with many awards for her service and dedication. Beulah also enjoyed sewing, camping and spending time with her family. Services will be officiated by Bruce Russell at the First Christian Church on Monday, September 19, 2005, at 1 p.m., at 432 S.E. Kane Street, Roseburg, Oregon. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The First Christian Church in her memory. Beulah's final resting place will be at Memorial Gardens with interment to be set for a later date.

William Ray 'Bill' Holmes

Holmes, William Ray 'Bill' " Age 71, of Sutherlin, Oregon, passed away on September 13, 2005, at his home with his family by his side. He was born April 10, 1934, in Peonia, Colorado to Wilford and Mary Ann (Aldridge) Holmes. Bill graduated from Laurelwood Academy in Gaston, Oregon, in 1952. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War. Bill moved to Sutherlin in 1970 from Oakland,Oregon. On January 1, 1982 Bill married Iva Jean Collins in Sutherlin. He was a low boy truck driver for 35 years. Bill worked for Paulson Trucking for 21 years and Whittaker Logging before he retired in 1992. He was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church of Sutherlin and the Oregon Equestrian Trails Club of Roseburg. Bill liked horseback riding, hunting, fishing and camping. He enjoyed sharing his time with his wife, Jean and their children and grandchildren. After his retirement Bill discovered he had a talent for metal work and spent many hours in his shop making horse trailers. Survivors include his wife, Jean Holmes of Sutherlin; children, Shawn Cordon of Sutherlin; Dawn Holmes of Madras, Oregon; Penny Rogers and her husband, Steve of Madras; Jenny Burgess and her husband, Steve of Tri-City, Oregon; and Cliff Holmes of Madras; step-children, Jeff Collins of Gresham, Oregon; and Charmayne Armer of Vancouver, Washington; 17 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and sister, Donna Hartness of Culp Creek, Oregon; Preceding him in death was his twin sister, Betty Roe who passed away in 2005. At Bill's request there will be no services. Private cremation rites have been held. CHAPEL OF THE FIRS is assisting the family.
