Presentation of nurse staffing law planned

ROSEBURG: A representative of the Oregon Nurses Association will talk on Thursday about how modifications to an Oregon law will change how nurses are staffed at hospitals.

Susan King, the executive director of ONA, will speak from 8 to 10 a.m., noon to 2 p.m. and 8 to 10 p.m. at the Roseburg Labor Temple, 742 S.E. Roberts Ave.

The point of the presentation is to make community members and health professionals aware of the law, which goes into effect in January.

The law gives nurses a chance to be more involved in decisions on how they are staffed, King said. Each hospital has a committee that decides how many nurses will work a particular shift. The law requires that half of the members on that committee be nurses who represent different areas of the hospital.

King will also talk about how nurses should be staffed based on the patients' conditions and needs. She will address how hospitals need to establish a process where they limit admissions of patients when they are short-staffed.

ONA, based in Tualatin, is an organization that represents 10,000 nurses in nearly 50 health care facilities, agencies and health departments in the state.
