The home gym advantage made all the difference last Saturday for the Umpqua Valley Gymnastics team, which hosted its biggest meet of the year, the Harvest Invitational, at the Flegel Center.

Three girls placed in the top three overall in their respective divisions, while the Level 5 team of placed third in the combined standings.

Leading the way for the UVG team was Gaby Cardenas, who won the 12-and-over Level 5 Senior division with an all-around score of 35.850.

Cardenas was second in all four disciplines — vault (8.550), bars (9.150), beam (9.000) and floor (9.150) — but her combined efforts were just enough to push her past the rest of the field.

Also performing well on Saturday were Lauren Baque and Michaela Jeffredo, who placed second in their respective divisions. Baque was the runner-up in the Level 4 Junior class with an all-around score of 35.000, while Jeffredo was second in the Level 5 junior class (35.800).

Baque finished first in the beam with a score of 8.700 and also earned a second place in vault (9.200). Jeffredo took second in bars (9.350), third in vault (8.600) and fourth on beam (8.800). She also went on to place sixth in the Level 5 bars finals with a score of 9.400.

Three other UVG gymnasts placed in the top five in their divisions.

Hannah Lee was fourth in the Level 4 Children’s division with an overall score of 34.000, Ashley Elias was fifth in the Level 4 Junior division with a score of 34.750, and Natasha Moffitt was fifth in the Level 6 Senior division with a score of 34.000.

Elias won the vault with a score of 9.250 and took second in the bars with the same score. But she faltered in the beam (8.100) and floor (8.150) events, costing her a top-three finish.

Another standout performance for the UVG team last Saturday came from Emily Pennington, a Level 5 Junior who took first place in vault (8.700).

The other local gymnasts competing at the Harvest Invitational were Carsen Fromdahl (Level 4), Colleen Winn (Level 4), Alaina Martinez-Reeves (Level 4), Megan Smith (Level 4), Mariah McGovern (Level 5) and Hannah Truitt (Level 5).

A total of 11 teams and 140 gymnasts from Portland to Medford made the trip Saturday for UVG’s biggest home meet of the year.
