SUTHERLIN: Several thousand stolen coins and two handguns were found when police searched a vehicle during a traffic stop early this morning.
Driver Troy R. Phelps, 23, admitted to stealing the coins, worth between $15,000 and $30,000, from a residence in Seattle, according to the Sutherlin Police Department. Officers also seized two handguns at the 12:45 a.m. stop on North State Street at East First Avenue.
The Roseburg man was cited for first-degree theft by receiving, driving uninsured, and unlawful possession of a firearm. Passenger Justin L. Pilson, 17, also of Roseburg was cited for unlawful possession of a firearm. Both were released.
The owner of the U.S. and foreign coins, a relative, didn't know the collection had been stolen until officers called him. The incident is still under investigation.
