OnBiz: Photo studio opening soon in downtown Roseburg

Downtown Roseburg provides just the setting Dulce Phelps wanted for her new photo studio.

Dulce Phelps Photography will open Jan. 2 at 412 S.E. Jackson St. The space for the new studio is currently under construction.

Phelps has been doing portraits and wedding photography from her home for the last two years. As her client base has grown, it became too much for a home-based operation.

"I really like downtown," Phelps said. "I like the character of downtown."

Phelps offers a number of options, including various sizes and types of portraits and indoor and outdoor settings. Phelps said downtown's buildings and park provide great locations for photographs.

She also offers custom-designed cards, custom collages, photo bracelets and albums.

SWANSON DOWNTIME: Glendale's Swanson Group has announced year-end shutdowns for its mills, according to Random Lengths WoodWire, a wood products industry trade publication.

The Glendale sawmill, along with Swanson stud mills in Roseburg and Glide, will be down the week of Dec. 26 for the holidays. Its Noti sawmill will be shut down for three to four weeks.

FUEL SAVING BUSINESS: A pair of residents have started a home-based business aimed at making it cheaper to leave the home.

Marcus Gaylor and Chris Wattman are Platinum Fuel Saver dealers. The Platinum Fuel Saver is a device that is designed to reduce fuel use in automobiles when installed.

Gaylor said it's easy to install and adds microscopic quantities of platinum to the engine, which makes non-burning fuel burn.

The duo have been approaching area businesses with automobile fleets with their product. The fuel saver costs $150 and lasts for 30,000 miles. Gaylor said Friday he reached a deal with Sutherlin True Value Hardware & Building Supply, which will stock the product.

Currently, Gaylor and Wattman don't have a storefront, but Gaylor said that is the goal.

STRUBLE VS. CHINA: U.S. Rep. Peter DeFazio has sent a letter to President Bush, urging him to "get tough" with China regarding intellectual property violations.

In other words, China is copying America's stuff and he wants it stopped.

A release from DeFazio's office singles out Glenn Struble Manufacturing Co. of Sutherlin, along with two other Oregon companies, as specific targets that have had product lines copied by Chinese producers.

The letter states, "It is simply not good enough to allow the status quo to continue or to tell U.S. small businesses that they're on their own. China must be held accountable for its rampant violations of the intellectual property rights of American companies."

DeFazio also introduced legislation in November urging U.S. Trade Representatives to use all legal avenues available to force China's compliance with intellectual property protections.

NOTHING IS SACRED: I am a frequent visitor to britannica.com, the Web site of Encyclopedia Britannica. It has always featured the best online dictionary and thesaurus, in my opinion.

Then, last week, the experience changed. There was a giant, stretched-out pig at the top of the site with the words "$160,000 Mortgage for Under $785/Month!" printed across it.

An animated fly even bounced around.

Now, maybe I'm naive, but I believed this bastion of worldly information wouldn't stoop to credit service banner ads.

There goes my illusion of a wholesome Internet.
