ROSEBURG

Local gymnasts fare well at two events

Umpqua Valley Gymnastics recently hosted its annual Anne Patterson Riverside Classic gymnastics meet. Leading the way for Level 9, Stefanie Huffer earned first-place finishes on vault, uneven bars and balance beam, and finished second on floor exercise. She also won the all-around competition.

At Level 8, Kaila Stutzman placed first on beam, second on bars and third on both the vault and floor to finish second all-around. Jordan Potter finished fourth on both the vault and floor exercise and placed sixth all-around.

At Level 7, Mary Ling placed second on vault, third on beam and finished fourth in the all-around.

UVG's optionals team (Levels 7, 8 and 9) earned second place in the team standings. At Level 6, Natasha Moffitt placed fifth on both the vault and bars. Gaby Cardenas also competed.

At Level 5, Michaela Jeffredo finished first on beam and third on both the bars and floor. Jeffredo was second all-around. Emily Pennington had first-place finishes on both the vault and floor exercise and finished the meet third all-around.

Hannah Truitt placed third on both the balance beam and floor exercise. Teaira Babcock placed fifth on beam and sixth on bars. Ashley Elias was seventh on both the vault and beam. Lauren Baque finished eighth on vault.

The Level 5 and 6 team also earned a second-place finish in the team standings.

At Level 4, Megan Smith placed first on both the bars and floor, second on vault and third on beam to earn first all-around in her age division. Hannah Lee finished fifth on both the vault and beam and sixth all-around. Coleen Winn finished second on vault and third on floor. Alaina Martinez-Reeves was seventh on both the vault and bars. Kily Gilbert and Jamie Miller also competed at level 4.

Two weeks ago, club members competed in the Tumble by the Bay Invitational at Coos Bay.

At Level 6, Moffitt placed second on balance beam, third on vault and fourth on bars to finish the meet third all-around. Cardenas had first place finishes on both the bars and beam and was second on vault to finish second all-around.

In the Level 5 age 11 division, Pennington won the all-around by placing first on vault, bars and floor. Pennington also placed second on beam. Babcock placed third on bars and fourth on both the vault and beam to finish fourth all-around. Baque finished second on vault, third on floor and fifth all-around. Elias placed third on balance beam.

In the Level 5 age 10 division, Truitt finished first on both the beam and floor and earned second all-around. Jeffredo placed first on bars, second on vault and beam, fourth on floor and finished the meet third all-around.

In the Level 4 age 10 division, Smith finished first on vault, bars and beam, second on floor and first all-around. Lee placed third on bars, beam and floor and fourth on vault to earn a third place finish all-around.

In the Level 4 age 9 division, Colleen Winn won the vault competition, placed third on beam and fourth on floor to finish the meet fourth all-around. Martinez-Reeves placed fourth on balance beam.

In the Level 4 age 8 division, Gilbert placed second on bars and finished the meet fifth all-around. Jami Miller also competed at this level. UVG's level 5 team finished second in the team standings and the Level 4 team placed third as a team.



MYRTLE CREEK

Golfers tie for Super Bowl tourney title

A pair of four-man teams tied for first place in the gross scoring category last Saturday in the ninth annual Pre-Super Bowl Tournament four-person scramble at Myrtle Creek Golf Course.

The team of Mark Wilson, Rob Perkins, Craig Siebenlist and Tim Heim finished with a gross score of 59, tying the other first-place score carded by the team of Dave England, Scott Larsen, Garry Parrish and Mark Bendele.

Chris Smith, Rich Coston, Ray Naredo and Woody Redner won the net scoring title with a score of 51.65. Mark Steen, Ron Slater and Mike and Sean Mosley took second with a score of 53.15.

Closest to the pin awards were won by Dale Black on hole No. 2, Perkins on hole No. 4, Parrish on No. 8, Bob Reed on No. 13 and Alan Fraser on hole No. 17.



HILLSBORO

Mat Club wrestlers compete at state

The Roseburg Mat Club wrestlers participated in the 2006 Oregon Kids Collegiate State Tournament last weekend at Liberty High School.

Placing first for RMC were Brandon Romano, Seth Thomas, Dylan Fors, Steven Evans and Reed VanAnrooy. Placing second were Jay Tovey, Drew VanAnrooy, Cole VanAnrooy, Ian Thomas and Sam Mecham. Devan Fors was third and Kasey Fox and Trevor Waugh were fourth. Brad Lander and Harold Stevens both placed fifth.

The mat club will begin the Freestyle and Greco seasons Feb. 27.

Rod andGun Club Show this weekend

The annual Roseburg Rod and Gun Club Gun & Knife Show is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday at the Douglas County Fairgrounds.

Hours of the event will be 9 a.m.-5 p.m. the first day and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. the second day. Admission will be $5 per person or $7 for a two-day pass.

Antique and modern firearms, knifes, coins, archery equipment and cowboy collectables will be available for exhibit, buying, selling and trading. Free appraisals will also be available.

Babe Ruth schedules meeting for Feb. 15

Umpqua Valley Babe Ruth will hold a general meeting at 7 p.m. Feb. 15 in room 310 of the Douglas County Courthouse.

The financial statement from the 2005 season will be presented and the budget for the upcoming season will be discussed. Those who plan to attend any of the upcoming coaching or umpiring clinics are encouraged to attend.

Discussion on possible spring ball teams will also be included. Those interested in filling one of three openings on the league's board of directors are also encouraged to attend.



ROSEBURG

Douglas umpires to hold meeting Sunday

The Douglas County Umpires Association will hold its first meeting of the season on Sunday.

The meeting will be held at Round Table Pizza, 2040 N.W. Stewart Parkway in Roseburg, with softball officials meeting at 3 p.m. and baseball officials at 4.

The meeting is open to returning officials and anyone else interested in officiating high school games this spring. All necessary training and instruction will be provided.

For new officials, starting now will also prepare them for working ASA girls softball or American Legion baseball games over the summer.

Free dinner scheduled to honor Hornets

A free dinner to honor the Camas Valley Lady Hornet basketball program is scheduled for 4 p.m. Feb. 25 at the Camas Valley Grange.

All alumni of the girls hoop program are invited to attend the event that will honor past and present players. Please RSVP by Feb. 20.

Lacrosse registrations taken Feb. 13 at RHS

The Roseburg Indians lacrosse program for boys and girls has scheduled registration for 5-7 p.m. Feb. 13 at the Roseburg High School Student Center.

Practices will begin at 4 p.m. Feb. 20 at Joseph Lane Middle School for the girls team and at Fremont Middle School for the boys team.

SUTHERLIN

Best ball tourney set to tee off Feb. 26

Oak Hills Golf Club is holding its Winter Best Ball Tournament on Feb. 26. The event will start with a 9 a.m. shotgun start with a three-player, best-ball format. Entry fees are $80 per team. Fees include lunch, and a closest to the pin and long drive award will also be featured.

SUTHERLIN

Coaching vacancies at Sutherlin High

Sutherlin High School is seeking to fill three coaching positions, one for the upcoming spring season and two for the fall season

The school is in search of an assistant track and field coach to replace Teresa Schaan. It is also seeking a boys soccer coach to replace Tim Bradley.

A position for an assistant football coach is also open. Positions will remain open until filled.
