Student arrested for handgun possession at Sutherlin High

SUTHERLIN — A 15-year-old boy was arrested on charges of possession of a loaded handgun at Sutherlin High School Wednesday morning.

“A student reported that another student had a gun, and the administration responded to that report,” School District Superintendent John Lahley said. “It did prove out that the student had a gun. It was in his backpack. We went into a lock down just for security purposes. That’s part of our process.”

Lahley said the school resource officer was called.

“Nobody was endangered,” Lahley said. “As per state statute and as per our policy, that student was removed from campus.”

Police contacted the boy in his classroom around 9:15 a.m., according to a police department press release. The boy was arrested and lodged at Douglas County Juvenile Detention Center on suspicion of unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a firearm in a public building.

The school will also enforce its own policies, Lahley said.

Lahley said the student did not make any threats, and the police statement said the boy’s intentions were unknown.

Lahley said the school followed its process properly. All reports of weapons are treated seriously. During lock down, students are not told the purpose. That’s because schools also have lock down drills so students and staff know how to respond, Lahley said.

The school principal later told the students about the situation.
