North Douglas 34
STAYTON -- With Wednesday's first-round 2A state playoff game tied at 39-31 late in the third quarter, Regis decided it did not want North Douglas to get any closer, going on a 23-3 run to close it out.
The No. 2 team from the Tri-Valley League stepped it up defensively in the fourth quarter, surrendering just one point on its way to a 62-34 victory over the Warriors.
Tough Rams defense and the absence of North Douglas' second-leading scorer, Craig DiStefano, proved to be a little too much for the Warriors, who ended their season at 14-12 overall.
"They shot 42 percent from the floor and held us to 22 percent," North Douglas coach Shane Mast said. "We were down 39-31 near the end of the third quarter. Then their full court man press tired us out. We just ran out of gas. They also forced a lot of turnovers."
DiStefano missed his second straight game due to an ankle injury. Senior Dustin Andes led the Warriors in scoring with 10 points, while DiStefano's replacement in the starting lineup, Kyle Anderson, had eight points. Andrew Hess scored seven points and Tyler Vancil added four points to go along with his team-leading 10 rebounds.
"I'm really proud of them," Mast said. "We're one of the smallest 2A teams in the state with an enrollment that should be 1A, and yet we're playing well against teams twice our size. These kids came to compete every night."
NORTH DOUGLAS (34) -- Dustin Andes 10, Anderson 8, Hess 7, Vancil 4, Woody 2, Roberts 2, Gallo 1, Swafford, Davis. Totals 11 10-15 34.

3-Point Shots -- North Douglas 2 (Hess, Anderson), Regis 5 (Espinoza 3, J. Obersinner, Dertano). Total Fouls -- North Douglas 12, Regis 16. Fouled Out -- none. Rebounds -- North Douglas 32 (Vancil 10); Regis 32 (Koehnke 9).
