The bagel making starts bright and early at Bronx Bagels. The new bagel shop in Sutherlin's Westwood Plaza makes all its offerings -- including breakfast sandwiches, soups, salads and various pastries -- fresh daily.
That means a 3:30 a.m. start.
It's quite a change for owners Don and Suzanne Brown. Don Brown had spent more than 30 years in the insurance business in California, while his wife was a teacher of 25 years.
They fell in love with a house on Sutherlin's Oak Hills Golf Club last year and made the move from California's central coast.
Without any experience in the bagel business, the couple hired a consultant who has spent 60 years in the field. He got his start in Brooklyn, which is where the business gets its name, decor and East Coast flavor.
"It's their New York-style bagels, as opposed to West Coast," Don Brown said. "The big difference is they're boiled first and then baked."
Boiling, as opposed to steaming, makes for a unique texture, Brown said, that might be new to a lot of bagel eaters who aren't from back east.
Bronx Bagels has eight employees. It is open 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays, with similar hours on Saturday and Sunday, depending on business, Brown said.
The Westwood Plaza is on Myrtle Street right off Interstate 5 Exit 136.
Information: 459-1993.
HOME DEPOT UPDATE, SORT OF: I didn't hear back from Home Depot before reporting the company had submitted plans for a more than 100,000-square-foot store in Roseburg on March 8.
I did last week, though.
"Roseburg is a very good market for the Home Depot," said a company spokeswoman. "There is, according to our research, plenty of home improvement business in the area that would well serve a store and we could serve the community well."
There is no timeline yet for an opening date, however.
SEND IT OUT: There's a new delivery option in Green. Actually, Goin' Postal offers a number of delivery and shipping options.
The new shipping, mailing and copy center offers FedEx, United Parcel Service, DHL and U.S. Postal Service shipping. It also has mailbox rentals, copy services, fax and laminating.
"I'm a lifetime resident of this area," said owner Dave Smith. "I just knew it was badly needed."
The business, at 4880 Grange Road next to Subway, also has additional retail space that Smith is hoping to fill. He said he's planning to offer office supplies, gifts and greeting cards, along with lottery Scratch-it tickets and Powerball.
Goin' Postal is a family-run business with no additional employees.
"I get lots of support from my wife (Wanda)," Smith said.
The shop is open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
Information: 679-5711.
BACKING OUT: The Harvard Chiropractic Clinic has moved. Fortunately, it wasn't far enough to necessitate a name change.
The clinic, with husband and wife doctors James and Sandra Medak, moved down the street from 1333 W. Harvard Ave. to 2365 W. Harvard Ave. this month.
Harvard Chiropractic Clinic had been at its previous location for 12 years. The new building is also newly remodeled.
The Medaks plan to expand the building in the coming months with additional office space. The business employs three, along with the two doctors.
Information: 673-8270.
BRAIN ON, BRAIN OFF: Last week was Brain Awareness Week. Interesting that it concludes on St. Patrick's Day weekend.
Nothing like green beer to fuel awareness of one's brain.
