CORVALLIS (AP) -- Tailback Yvenson Bernard was held out as a precaution, but Joe Newton was back on the field for Oregon State's spring game on Saturday.
Newton missed all of last season after he was injured in agility drills to open fall practice and needed surgery to repair a muscle tear in his lower left leg.
Newton caught a 7-yard touchdown pass from Matt Moore and put the Beavers' white-jerseyed team in front of the black-jerseyed team, 7-0.
The 6-foot-7, 258-pound Newton is expected to key the Beavers' offense in the upcoming season.
"It felt great to be out there and play in a game situation," the tight end said. "And it feels good to get in the end zone again."
A prep standout from Roseburg, Newton has eight career touchdown receptions at Oregon State. Against Notre Dame in the Insight Bowl two seasons ago, Newton had seven catches for 85 yards and two scores.
Newton said he enjoyed finally playing with Moore, a transfer from UCLA who started for the Beavers last season -- which Newton missed.
"We hooked up on a couple of passes. He's looking for me out there and hopefully I can be on the receiving end of a lot of them," Newton said.
For the record, Newton caught four passes for 33 yards and a score. Moore completed 12 of 16 passes for 112 yards and an interception.
After a fairly organized first half, the teams played loose in the second with a running clock for some 6,138 fans. Andy Stewart's 1-yard dive made it 20-10 for the Black team.
Black won, 31-10.
"I'd give up a 'B,"' Moore said of the state of the offense. "There's a lot of things we can work on. I think the biggest thing is our intensity."
Bernard, who will be a junior, rushed for 1,321 yards and 13 touchdowns last season.
Coach Mike Riley has limited his practice this spring because the coaching staff already knows what he can do.
As it stands now, Moore is projected to be the No. 1 quarterback in fall camp with Canfield behind him -- displacing Ryan Gunderson, Moore's backup last season.
Canfield was 4-of-10 for 71 yards for the White team, and 8-of-22 for 115 yards for the Black.
Gunderson hit walk-on Daniel Weis with a 3-yard pass late in the game, and Gunderson finished 8-of-18 for 121 yards.
Oregon State finished 5-6 overall and 3-5 in the Pacific-10 Conference last season. The year ended with a thud as the Beavers fell 56-14 to rival Oregon in the Civil War.
