The Cuban and Caribbean sounds of Ska Cubano will be one of the acts at Winstons Riverbend Live! concert series this summer.
WINSTON The Riverbend Live! Concert Series is celebrating its 10th anniversary this summer with a tribute to Ray Charles, a reappearance of Mumbo Gumbo, childrens theater, cowboy poetry, and Cuban and Caribbean music by Ska Cubano.
The venue of music, humor and drama will feature entertainment each Friday night from July 7 to Aug. 4 at Riverbend Park in Winston.
The tenth anniversary kicks off July 7 with The Northwests Tribute to Ray Charles. The show combines the talents of musicians from around the Northwest music community, featuring players from jazz, R&B, soul and blues. The show was developed to pay tribute to Charles, a man who affected every performer who participates in the show Patrick Lamb, Sweet Baby James Benton, Linda Hornbuckle and many others.
July 14 will bring Mumbo Gumbo of Danville, Calif., to the stage. The band was the first to perform at Riverbend Live! Concert Series 10 years ago. The group performs a blend of many musical styles with a thread of New Orleans rhythm and blues woven through it hence, the name Mumbo Gumbo.
Dick Nichols of Winston, president of the Riverbend Live! Concert Series, describes the group as very high energy and engaging.
Della Harp and her drama team will work with area youth to produce a childrens theater show July 21 and 22. The DisasterNaughts will feature children in a drama that will highlight a group of misfit astronauts who must save Earth from aliens and a rogue planet.
The group will meet four days a week for six weeks to prepare for the production.

July 28 will feature a night of cowboy poetry and Western music. The cowboy poet and humorist Gary McMahan will return with his world-class singing and yodeling while Baxter Black will entertain with his true stories and poems about his life as a large animal veterinarian and cowboy.
Its something people get hooked on even if they hate cows or cowboys, Nichols said. Black has a syndicated radio commentary and is heard regularly on National Public Radio.
Ska Cubano will rock the stage Aug. 4 for the concerts final night. The group performs a mixture of Cuban and Caribbean music. Performers Nathan Lerner (Natty Bo), Eddie Tan Tan Thornton and Megumi Mesaku combine talents to create a unique blend of Jamaican and Cuban ska music.
They jump in the audience; they make you dance, said Mo Nichols, 60, of Winston, secretary of the Riverbend Live! Concert Series.
The series mission statement is to bring in talent that wouldnt normally be enjoyed without traveling a substantial distance and paying a significant fee, Mo Nichols said.
Attendees are welcome to bring blankets, lawn chairs and food. All events are free; donations are accepted.
