WINSTON It seemed natural for Isidro and Adriana Gonzalez to name their daughter Emma. For the Gonzalez family of Winston, the name has become a family custom.
When Emma Morgan was born to Adriana, 39, and Isidro Gonzalez, 46, on Nov. 15, she marked the third generation of Emmas in the family.
Adriana Gonzalezs mothers name is Emma as well as her grandfathers sister.
Tradition wasnt the only reason they followed suit.
I like it, independent of my moms name, Gonzalez said.
The Gonzalezes werent alone in naming their baby girl Emma.
In both Oregon and Washington, Emma was the most popular girls name for 2005, with 280 bearing the name in Oregon and 420 receiving the name in Washington.
For boys, Jacob was the top name, also in both states, with 325 babies taking the name in Oregon and 474 in Washington.
In staying with a Mothers Day tradition, Jo Anne Barnhart, commissioner of Social Security, recently announced the top 1,000 baby names in the United States for 2005 Emily and Jacob. Emma was the second most popular girls name in the nation, and Michael, the second most popular boys name.
Based on all Social Security card applications for children born last year, Emily and Jacob are the most popular baby names for the seventh year in a row, said Barnhart.
Emily has been the most popular female name in the country each year since 1996 and Jacob, the most popular since 1999. New to the top 10 in the country in 2005 were Ava and Anthony.
The top girls names for Oregon and Washington were remarkably similar in 2005, with only one name difference. Hannah made the top five list in Oregon and Isabella hit the charts in Washington as the fifth most popular girls name. The similarities among boys names were notable as well. The top two names in both states were Jacob and Ethan.
Social Security also produced a list of top 100 names given to twins born in 2005 Jacob and Joshua took the lead.
Social Security started compiling baby name lists in 1997. The Social Security Web site, www.socialsecurity.gov, provides baby name lists for each year dating back to 1880.
Checking the most popular names in 1880 shows Emmas longevity. It was the third most popular that year. John and Mary ranked first.
