Glide capitalizes and moves on

Things seemed to unravel in a hurry for the Knappa High baseball team on Friday -- and the Glide Wildcats took full advantage.

Three errors on the Loggers' first three plays in the field led to three runs for the Wildcats, who held onto that momentum for the rest of the game and cruised to an 8-4 victory in the OSAA 2A/1A state quarterfinals at Roseburg's Legion Field.

"They got a little rattled after those first two errors, and it kept going," Glide second baseman Eric Harryman said. "We jumped all over it and then got on a roll from there."

That's for sure, considering the Wildcats' three-run first inning -- on no hits, mind you -- matched the run-scoring output the they mustered in a 3-2 playoff victory over Riddle the day before. But it proved to be Glide's big key to victory and moved the Wildcats one win away from the 2A/1A state title game.

"That was extremely large just because the day before, we didn't play real well," Glide coach Al Skinner said. "And putting some runs on the board early gives us the confidence to swing. It's a little bit easier to swing when you have a lead."

Glide (21-3), this year's Big Fir League champion, will hit the road to play either Santiam Christian or Monroe in the state semifinals on Tuesday. The state title game will be played Saturday at Volcanos Stadium in Keizer.

Harryman went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a triple and Bob Barker helped his cause on the mound with a two-run single in the fourth inning. Barker also rebounded from a shaky start to pitch a complete-game four-hitter.

"I had to make an adjustment on the mound," said Barker, who settled down in the third inning when he started throwing from a different spot on the rubber in the third inning. "After that I got in my comfort zone."

Knappa (20-7), the Northwest League champions, got a stellar outing from starting pitcher Sean Ferguson. He gave up eight runs and struck out four in 5 1/3 innings, but only three of those runs were earned.

The Loggers jumped to a 1-0 lead in their half of the first when Beve Maki scored on a wild pitch from Barker. In Glide's half, though, Travis Olson reached on a throwing error by Maki at shortstop and the next batter, Harryman, reached when third baseman Jordan Shear booted a grounder. Barker followed with a sacrifice bunt, but Ferguson threw the ball away trying to get Barker at first base.

Kinne followed with an RBI groundout to score Barker from third, putting the Wildcats up 3-0.

"Our pitcher wasn't feeling his oats today, and I'm sure he was a little nervous," Harryman said. "But we knew that if we came back and retaliated in that inning, we would put them back in their spot."

Joe Strickland cut Glide's lead to 3-2 in the second when he scored on another wild pitch from Barker, but an RBI single in the bottom of the inning by Harryman scored Brock Halter on a close play at the plate. Than after Jeff Olson scored on another Knappa error for Glide in the fourth, Barker delivered a two-run single one inning later to put the Wildcats up 7-2.

"I don't know if this is the most talented team I'v ever had top to bottom," Skinner said. "But one thing about this club iss they know how to win and they find a way to win. There's times when you have teams with a lot of talent, but they can't do that."
