Headstone for Civil War vet to be placed

ROSEBURG -- A new headstone will be dedicated Saturday for a Civil War veteran buried in a Roseburg cemetery.

Russel B. Johnson, who died in the Roseburg Soldiers home in 1902 at the age of 60, was buried in the Independent Order of Odd Fellows Cemetery on Douglas Avenue. His grave has no marker.

The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Eugene-Springfield Camp, will conduct a dedication of the headstone at 10 a.m. Saturday at the cemetery. Members dress in period Civil War clothing, give a musket salute and play Taps.

The organization's mission is to survey all cemeteries in the state to ensure that the graves of all Civil War veterans' graves are marked. The group requested the headstone from Veterans Affairs on behalf of Johnson's great-granddaughter, Diane Goings of Dallas, Ore.

The public is welcome at the event.
