PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) The Small Business Administration has opened seven centers on the Oregon Coast to offer loan assistance to fishermen and businesses affected by a cutback in commercial salmon fishing.
Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez declared a fishery resource disaster on July 6, making the loans available. They are for up to $1.5 million. They carry an interest rate of 4 percent, payable over 30 years.
Northwest members of Congress and Gov. Ted Kulongoski have pressed the administration for a general disaster declaration, which would make more assistance available.
The centers are in Brookings at US Bank, Port Orford at the harbor masters office, Coos Bay at the Chamber of Commerce, Florence at the Human Services Center, Newport at the International Terminal Building, Garibaldi at the port, and Astoria at the port.
