Some spiffy improvements are in line for Douglas Avenue in downtown Roseburg around the Douglas County Courthouse, including drinking fountains, historic street lamps, a grass-and-tree median and faux brick crosswalks.
The Roseburg City Council awarded the bid Wednesday for the contract to LTM-Roseburg Paving Company for just under $1.2 million.
The contract awarded is a third higher than the engineers estimate of $900,000, but the city staff recommended approving the higher bid because of a rise in the price of petroleum products, the restrictions placed on working in the downtown area and a shortage of available contractors.
Itll look nice, said Public Works Director Clay Baumgartner. Its our main entrance into the downtown.
Douglas Avenue will be repaved from Stephens Avenue to Claire Street. Sidewalks along that stretch will also be redone.
Funding for this project was made available from the Urban Renewal Agency, which was recently shifted to take in downtown Roseburg.
Douglas County also chipped in $30,000.
Baumgartner said the city hopes to have this project done by Nov. 17, in time for the holiday season.
Most of the significant improvements will be put into place on the blocks nearest the courthouse.
