Friday football roundup: Trojans pound Elmira, 28-0; Yoncalla, Glendale post wins

WINSTON -- Derik Farley, Dustin Farley and Andrew Neilson combined for 128 rushing yards on 14 carries, and the Trojans opened the season with a 28-0 home victory over Elmira in the season opener.

Douglas finished with 265 yards of offense, 225 coming in the ground. Ten different players carried the ball for the Trojans, who also limited the Falcons to 98 yards of offense and just 1.7 yards per rush.

Derik Farley, who had three quarterback sacks, six tackles and a blocked punt, had a 46-yard touchdown run on his only carry of the game that put the Trojans up 13-0 after Robbie Perron's point-after kick was blocked.

Kevin Godfrey caught a 13-yard scoring pass from Cody Walton with five seconds left in the first half, and Andrew Neilson capped the scoring with a 10-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter.

"I am really pround of the effort tonight," Douglas coach Rick Taylor said. "I could not have asked much more out of the kids on both sides of the ball. We needed this win to set a positive tone for the season, and they really earned it."

The contest was scoreless until the fourth quarter, then Yoncalla quarterback Josh Robles scored on a one-yard run and teammate Scott Roberts added a 10-yard TD run.

Caleb McDaniel finished with a game-high 115 yards rushing on 11 carries for Yoncalla. Ends McDaniel (three quarterback sacks) and Brett Andry (two sacks), and noseguard Daniel Pollock (two sacks, two forced fumbles) led the defensive effort.

GLIDE -- In a defensive battle, quarterback Jake Platt's nine-yard run in the second quarter provided the only score as the Class 2A Pirates shut out the 3A Wildcats Friday night in a non-league contest.

"It was poor execution on our part," Glide coach Jody Doty said. "Our defense struggled a little bit in the first half and our offense could not generate anything. The kids are struggling to pick up the offense."

Glide only managed 72 yards of total offense compared to 227 for the Pirates.

Glide (1-1) heads south to play Riddle Friday in a non-league game. Glendale (1-0) plays host to St. Mary's of Medford in non-league action.

Elkton 24

Crow 8

ELKTON -- Elkton did something Friday that is a very rare feat for a football team: It won two games against two different teams. The Elks beat Paisley 2-0 in a Skyline League forfeit and defeated Crow in a non-league game.

The game against Paisley was forfeited because they could not field a team, so Elkton coach J.J. Mast scheduled Crow to replace them.

"I would have to say we had a very good night, with two wins," Mast said. "We really took it to Crow. We hit them hard and ran the ball very well."

Senior quarterback/tailback Josh Ruble was the star of the night on offense for the Elks. He threw for 133 yards and one touchdown along with 213 rushing yards and three more scores. Elkton finished with 504 yards total offense.

Defensive end Chad White, a transfer from Sacramento, had six tackles for 42 yards in losses. Outside linebacker Mac Smith led the team with 11 tackles.

"I felt good to beat a state quarterfinalist last year in Crow," Mast said. "It was the most complete I have seen us play in awhile."

Elkton (2-0 overall, 1-0 Skyline) plays host to Prospect next Friday.

PROSPECT -- Camas Valley won on the scoreboard Friday, but suffered a big loss on the field in a Skyline League football win over the Cougars.

Senior quarterback Nick Weaver rushed for 162 yards and three touchdowns on 15 carries before suffering a broken leg in the third quarter. He'll be lost for the remainder of the season and be replaced by junior Cody Kievit.

CV's Cameron Wolfe had three receptions for 112 yards and two TDs. The Hornets got strong defensive games from outside linebackers Dennis Wolfe (13 tackles) and Kievit (12 tackles), and sophomore Ben Carter (seven tackles, two fumble recoveries).

Camas Valley coach Eli Wolfe was pleased with the victory, but heartbroken to lose Weaver. "I'm proud how the kids fought through adversity," he said.

Prospect quarterback Jacob Schultz accounted for all of his team's points. He threw for 189 yards and two scores and ran for 127 yards and a touchdown.

Camas Valley (2-0 overall, 1-0 Skyline) is scheduled to host Lowell in non-league game next Friday. Eli Wolfe said he's considering canceling the contest due to a small roster.

Mohawk 60

Days Creek 14

DAYS CREEK -- After beating Crow last week, the Wolves played a tougher opponent in Mohawk on Friday and were beaten soundly by the arm and legs of quarterback Brody Wilkins.

Wilkins threw for four touchdowns and ran for two more. Tyler Ludwig also had a stellar outing for the Indians, catching and running for a touchdown.

"They have great speed and we had a hard time defending them on the edge," Days Creek coach Gene Forman said. "I would be surprised if anyone can compete with them."

John Wolf had a strong game for Days Creek. He ran the ball 14 times for 82 yards and touchdown, and returned a kickoff 90 yards for a score.

"We moved the ball well against them in the first half, but mental errors and penalites cost us points," Forman said.

Mohawk more than doubled Days Creek's output on the ground, 279-136.

Days Creek (1-1) hosts Paisley in Skyline League play next Friday -- assuming Paisley has enough players to suit up.
