Glide heads to the coast Friday to face Reedsport in its Sunset Six League football opener and Wildcats coach Jody Doty hopes his club has learned from its mistakes after a 2-2 record in non-league games.
"We're still getting there. We've made some good strides, but we're not where we need to be," Doty said. "We're not at the top of our game, but we're getting better."
The Braves are also 2-2, riding a two-game winning streak after defeating St. Mary's of Medford 46-21 and South Umpqua 14-6.
In other Sunset openers, Gold Beach (4-1) is at Bandon (2-3) and Coquille (1-3) visits Myrtle Point (2-2). The top three teams advance to the Class 2A state playoffs.
Glide and Reedsport have split their last two meetings, with the Wildcats winning 42-7 in Glide last year and the Braves prevailing 20-16 in Reedsport in 2004 -- a loss that kept Glide out of the playoffs.
"It's going to be real similar (each week in league). Everyone's going to be battling," Doty said. "Reedsport has some tools, so we'll have to be ready."
Reedsport coach Lynn Fulps says the Wildcats present a tough challenge, especially with their size advantage.
"Boy, are they huge," Fulps said. "I hope their size doesn't roll us over and I imagine they have a little more experience. We're a really green group. We have 12 seniors, but only three of them have played football before (in the recent past)."
The Braves are quarterbacked by Justin Fulps, a 5-11, 170-pound senior and son of the coach. Justin Fulps was a first-team all-league defensive back last year.
Another senior who the Wildcats will need to contain is halfback Patrick Harris. The 5-6, 155-pounder was a workhorse last week against South Umpqua, packing the pigskin 36 times for 151 yards and two touchdowns.
"He's one of those kids who gets stronger as the game goes by," Lynn Fulps said.
Doty would like to see the Wildcats take better care of the football and step up their offense. Glide has turned the ball over 12 times, including five turnovers against Culver last week, and has only scored 51 points in four games.
"That's our struggle right now," the coach said, referring to the turnovers. "We've been putting the ball on the ground too much."
Senior Casey Walker will open at quarterback for the Wildcats, while juniors Darren Belloir and Brock Halter are the top running threats.
