WINSTON -- Sometimes, the hot hand just needs to be fed the ball. That's what the South Umpqua High football team did for most of the game.
The Lancers used a great performance from senior Matt Peterman and a solid outing out of Bo Younker to down Douglas 29-10 Thursday night in a Far West League football game.
"We like to give the ball to the hot back, and it was Peterman tonight," South Umpqua coach Matt Loun said. "I was really happy with our running game."
Peterman ended the game with 156 yards on 15 carries, including a 31-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Younker had 48 yards, and had TD runs of 3 and 6 yards for the Lancers (2-5 overall, 1-1 FWL).
"It was my best running game of the season," Peterman said. "The linemen were doing a heck of a job blocking tonight. Coach (Loun) challenged us to score a touchdown in the first quarter and I was able to get it done."
The win marked the third consecutive victory for S.U. over rival Douglas, which dropped its seventh consecutive league game.
As a team, South Umpqua finished the game with 38 carries for 227 yards, compared to 36 rushes for 129 for the Trojans.
"The running backs are fast enough. All we need is to make them a hole and they will score," S.U. tackle Brandon Crouch said. "We were very pumped up to play our rival. It was a hard fought battle."
South Umpqua didn't need to throw much.
Quarterback Ryan Smedley went 4-of-5 for 110 yards, including a short slant route to Gabe Flores which turned into a 42-yard score right before halftime. Flores ended the game with two receptions for 75 yards.
"With a sophomore quarterback, we have to be patient in the passing game," Loun said. "He (Smedley) made throws when he needed to and the receivers made great plays. It just doesn't make sense to pass when your running backs are making big plays against the defense."
Douglas (2-4, 0-2) had the ball for 60 offensive plays, 17 more than South Umpqua. But after the first quarter, the Lancers' defense stepped it up. They forced two fumbles, made one quarterback sack and stopped the Trojans twice after the first 12 minutes.
"For the second week in a row, we didn't handle the edges," said Douglas coach Rick Taylor. "We can't allow teams to get outside of us and get the big runs. South Umpqua did a nice job and made the plays they needed to. I thought our offense did a better job of moving the ball, especially on the ground."
For Douglas, Cody Walton was 7-of-17 for 101 yards and a touchdown. Kevin Godfrey had four catches for 79 yards and turned a quick slant into a 49-yard touchdown in the opening quarter.
Robbie Perron ended the game with 83 yards on 14 carries and kicked a 33-yard field goal late in the first quarter.
Both South Umpqua and Douglas are on the road next week. The Lancers travel to Florence to face No. 1-ranked Siuslaw, while the Trojans are at North Bend.
