SUTHERLIN Too fast, too furious.
That might be the name of a movie, but it was a perfect description of top-ranked Siuslaws performance against the Sutherlin High football team on Thursday night.
Kody Thrall and Jordan Rainwater each scored a pair of touchdowns and led a balanced offensive attack for the Vikings, who dominated the line of scrimmage and held the Bulldogs otherwise potent offense in check on their way to a 35-13 Far West League victory at Sutherlin High.
They definitely had the horses and took advantage of the chances they had, Sutherlin co-coach Josh Gary said. We lost to a better team. A lot of people figured this would be a big upset if we won, and we thought we could upset them.
Try as they might, the Bulldogs (4-2 overall, 1-1 FWL) couldnt keep up with the faster, more-experienced Vikings (6-0, 2-0). Siuslaw racked up 373 yards of total offense, with 193 coming on the ground. Not only did the Vikings go without punting, but only two of their drives didnt finish in the endzone.
That left Sutherlin with the daunting task of playing catchup throughout the game, and the Bulldogs couldnt keep up.
Well have to learn from this, said Sutherlin senior quarterback Dane Gilman, who also intercepted a pass and recovered a fumble on defense. Maybe if we get to the playoffs well see them again and practice twice as hard so we can be better prepared.
The 13 points Sutherlin scored nearly matched the 19 points the Vikings had allowed in their previous five games. But the Vikings also got the big plays when they needed them on both sides of the ball and limited the Bulldogs to 195 total yards.
It was nice to see us come back and respond the way we did, Siuslaw coach Tim Dodson said. And the big plays helped us quite a bit too, on offense and defense.
The Vikings forced the Bulldogs to respond at the start, as a 51-yard run by sophomore quarterback Jacob Mitchell set up a 6-yard touchdown run from Thrall with less than three minutes gone in the game. But Sutherlins defense held on Siuslaws next two possessions, and the Bulldogs capped an 80-yard drive to start the second quarter with a 39-yard touchdown scamper from Lee Becker that tied the game at 7-all.

Siuslaw answered, as David Mesas 5-yard touchdown run gave the Vikings a 14-7 lead. Sutherlin responded by driving to midfield, but Beckers 8-yard run on a fourth-and-nine gave the Vikings the ball on their 45 with 28.3 seconds left.
Four plays later, Mitchell hit Rainwater in the endzone on a 10-yard TD toss set up by what looked like a questionable pass interference penalty called on Gilman.
It looked like he had good position, Gary said. There was a little contact, but he got on the inside of his man. Thats a tough call to make on the spur of the moment, though.
Sutherlin did all it could to stay in the game, converting a fourth-and-two at their own 14 with time winding down in the third quarter. But three plays later, James DiCarlo picked off a pass from Gilman and, while he was being tackled by Sutherlins Caleb Trowbridge, handed the ball off to Rainwater.
The senior scampered down the sideline and dove head first into the endzone, giving Siuslaw a comfortable 28-7 lead.
Yeah, they gambled a little bit, Dodson said. But I guess thats what you do when you play the No. 1 team in the state.
Sutherlin kept a glimmer of hope at the start of the fourth quarter when Gabe Anderson-Marquez scored on a 1-yard plunge with 8:40 left. But the Bulldogs ensuing onside kick went just seven yards, and Siuslaw capped the scoring with a 2-yard TD run by Thrall four minutes later.
Becker was limited to 91 yards on 16 carries after running for 339 yards on 19 rushes against Douglas last week. Thrall finished with 102 yards on 16 carries and was complemented by a 16-carry, 97-yard performance by Mesa.
Siuslaw continues league play at home against South Umpqua next Friday. Sutherlin will try to rebound when it plays at Brookings the Bulldogs second road game of the season.
