A Roseburg man was arrested Monday and charged with attempted murder after police said he seriously injured the 18-month-old son of his live-in girlfriend.

Jeremy Lee Wease, 27, was taken into custody at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Portland, where the child underwent surgery to repair his liver and to relieve pressure on his brain.

A hospital spokeswoman this morning said she could not provide any information on the child's condition.

Emergency room workers at Mercy Medical Center called police Sunday evening to report they believed a child had been abused. The child had been taken to the hospital in critical condition, suffering from a lacerated liver and head injuries, according to a report from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

An officer with the Winston Police Department responded to the Roseburg hospital and requested assistance from the Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff’s detectives went to the hospital and assisted with the investigation.

Officials did not provide details this morning on the circumstances regarding how they believe the child was injured.

On Monday, sheriff’s detectives drove to Portland. There, they spoke with Wease, and Carrie McCullough, the child’s mother. Wease was taken into custody and returned to Roseburg. He was lodged in the Douglas County Jail, where he remains without bail.

Wease was also charged with first-degree assault and first-degree criminal mistreatment.

He was scheduled to appear before a judge at 1:30 p.m. today for a video arraignment.
