Roseburg adopted a sister Monday night, the Spanish city of Aranda de Duero.
A thousand years Roseburgs elder, Aranda de Duero lies in the fertile wine country of the Duero River valley, 100 miles north of Madrid.
We have the one in Japan and now the one in Spain and that opens up opportunities for education and for travel, said Mayor Larry Rich.
Following Shobu, Japan, Aranda became Roseburgs second sister city after an effort that began in 2002.
Earl Jones of Abacela Winery chose the city because like Roseburg, Aranda de Duero lies in a cool, rainy climate ideal for the tempranillo grape his vineyard specializes in.
Formal approval of the sister-city relationship had been held up by the election of a socialist government in Spain after the 2004 Madrid train bombing and the dampened Spanish affection for America that ensued.
Roseburg and Aranda have carried out an informal sister-city relationship for the better part of four years. With the unanimous approval of the Roseburg City Council, Mayor Rich will now be able to join Aranda de Duero Mayor D. Angel Guerra Garcia in signing a simultaneous decree by video polyconference. No date has been chosen for this event.
They figured that would reduce the traveling expense, Jones joked. A polyconference is conducted over the Internet.
Jones said the two cities have already reached out to one another, with American students corresponding in Spanish and Spanish students writing back in English.
This exchange between us and them has already happened, Jones said.
The sister city agreement allows Roseburg and Aranda to assist each other economically, educationally and culturally.
A display of some kind will be put up in each city, informing residents about their sister on the other side of the world.
Groups from Roseburg will travel to the Old World, while those from Aranda de Duero will come to Oregon in the New World.
