Ashley Zeigler of Roseburg was crowned queen of the Umpqua Valley Roundup Saturday evening.
Zeigler, 20, was Oregons High School Rodeo Queen for 2004-05 but had never competed at the professional level.
Four contestants competed for the crown at the Douglas County Fairgrounds, and queen adviser Desiree Hammett said all four did a great job. Zeigler won in every category horsemanship, speech, appearance and personality.
Josey Gilbert of Riddle took first runner-up, Chantelle Henrikson of Roseburg received the congeniality award, and Ashley Noel of Coquille received the Miss Rodeo Oregon Spirit Award.
All four of the girls were just phenomenal, just a fantastic group of young ladies, Hammett said. It was such a tough competition and the girls, they were just all so wonderful, but Ashley did a great job that day, and Im really excited to be working with her this year.
Zeigler said she has always wanted to go to Miss Rodeo America, and she needed experience on the rodeo circuit, so she decided there was no better place to start than her hometown. She is a 2005 Roseburg High School graduate and is studying psychology at Northwest Christian College in Eugene.
This is a great rodeo, she said. Its one of the only rifle rodeos on the West Coast.
Shell spend a week at the Umpqua Valley Roundup in June, as well as representing the rodeo across the state. She was crowned by outgoing UVR Queen Michelle Martin of Roseburg, a graduate of RHS who now attends Oregon State University.
Zeigler said the pageant was a great learning experience.
I had never done pro rodeo before, she said. I didnt know what to expect. ... It was a great pageant. It was really difficult, I know, for the judges to decide who was going to win.
