<b>Baseball, softball umpires to meet</b>
ROSEBURG: The first meeting of the season for local high school baseball and softball umpires will be held Tuesday evening at Jo Lane Middle School.
Both groups of umpires will hold a joint meeting beginning at 7 p.m. in the school library, accessed from the northeast side of the Jo Lane campus.
Rules packets will be handed out and changes in rules from last season will be discussed.
Both experienced umpires and people interested in officiating games for the first time this spring are invited to attend.

<b>Polamalu changes name officially</b>
PITTSBURGH: Pittsburgh Steelers safety Troy Polamalu, a graduate of Douglas High School in Winston, legally changed his name Wednesday, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review on Wednesday.
The move, however, wont impact the name on the back of the Steelers No. 43 jersey.
The paper reported on its Web site that Polamalu who was legally known as Troy Benjamin Aumua changed his name to Troy Aumua Polamalu. The name change became official when Allegheny County Common Pleas Judge Judith Friedman signed a court order during a hearing attended by the football player.
The strong safety, who played college ball at Southern California, has gone by Polamalu since moving to Tennmile from the Los Angeles area. Both his driver's license and social security card list the name.
Polamalu is his mothers maiden name. His parents divorced shortly after he was born, according to the petition he filed requesting the name change.
<b>Waechter a finalist for major award</b>
MONMOUTH: Former Western Oregon University pitcher Nick Waechter is one of five finalists for the Ad Rutschman Small College Male Athlete of the Year.
The 55th annual Oregon Sports Awards will be held at the Tiger Woods Center on the Nike World Campus on Feb. 11, beginning at 7 p.m. The event will honor the top athletes, coaches, teams, administrators and organizations from last year in the state of Oregon.
Waechter, a Roseburg High graduate, was a perfect 12-0 on the mound in 2006, helping to lead the Wolves to their sixth straight conference title and a No. 1 seed at the NCAA Division II west region tournament.
The junior right-hander, who had a 2.36 ERA, was the Great Northwest Athletic Conference and Division II West Region pitcher of the year, and was named to the second-team All-American squad. He is WOUs all-time leader in strikeouts with 269.
He was drafted in the 23rd round by the New York Mets and signed with the organization last June.
Other nominees in Waechters category include Corban College basketball player Eric Fiegi, Willamette runner Nick Symmonds, George Fox baseball player Derrick Jones and Concordia track and field standout Scott Halley.
<b>NAMPA, Idaho</b>
Parnell becoming a major contributor
Former Sutherlin High standout Justin Parnell continues to lead the Northwest Nazarene mens basketball team in scoring through last weekends games.
Parnell, a 6-foot-4 freshman guard, was averaging 15.1 points, 3.6 assists and 3.6 rebounds for the Crusaders, who are 7-12 overall and 2-6 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play. He was shooting 41 percent from the field and three-point line, and 90 percent from the foul line.
Parnell scored 21 points in a 94-79 loss to Saint Martins College last Saturday. He had 18 points in an 88-70 loss to Seattle Pacific on Thursday.
Jason Simmons, a 6-8 junior forward from Oakland, is second on the team in scoring (12.8 points) and averages 5.6 rebounds. He was shooting 55 percent from the field and 78 percent from the line.
Northwest Nazarene visits Central Washington Saturday.
<b>Block run benefits cross country </b>
LOOKINGGLASS: The 2007 Lookingglass Block Run or Walk is set for 10 a.m. March 3 in Lookingglass.
Runners or walkers can choose a 2-mile or 5-mile distance for the flat and fast course in the countryside. Awards will be given for 1st through 50th places for each race.
Both races start and finish at Lookingglass Elementary School, seven miles west of Roseburg.
All proceeds benefit the Roseburg High School, Joseph Lane and Fremont cross country teams.
Entry fee is $17 before Feb. 25, and $25 after that and on race day. The fee includes a long-sleeve T-shirt. Cost is $10 without the T-shirt.

<b>Winston Fire wins amateur invite</b>
CORVALLIS: The Winston Fire, a sixth-grade traveling girls basketball team, placed first at the Oregon Amateur Invitational tournament this past weekend.
Geniva Johnson had 11 points and nine rebounds, Sadie Birch added eight points and eight rebounds, Tori Bond had eight points and seven steals and Cheyene Harris chipped in seven points in their teams 41-26 title-game victory over a Keizer team.
The Fire also topped Hurricane Hoops of Medford, 27-16, the Rockin Raiders 45-29, and a team from Dallas, 50-40, in the semifinals.
Other team members include Kristen Epps, Brianna Bohnenkemp, Meranda Zanni and Rheo Rocco. The teams coaches are Bill Bond and Mark Epps.
<b>Gibbons making her mark at PLU</b>
TACOMA, Wash.: Trinity Gibbons, a Riddle High product, has helped the Pacific Lutheran University womens basketball team to an 11-8 season record and 6-5 mark in the Northwest Conference.
Gibbons, a 5-8 sophomore guard, was averaging 2.7 points and led the Lutes with 50 assists in games through Tuesday. Shes averaging 19.8 minutes a game.
PLU defeated Willamette 58-42 in Salem last Saturday. The Lutes lost to Puget Sound 67-60 Tuesday and host Lewis & Clark tonight.
<b>Humphreys coming on at NW Christian</b>
EUGENE: Oakland High product Jordan Humphreys is averaging 10.7 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.9 steals for the Northwest Christian College mens basketball team.
The Beacons are 10-11 overall after a 73-68 loss to George Fox University Monday. Humphreys, a 5-11 junior guard, had 14 points and four assists in the contest. Hes shooting 43 percent from the field, 39 percent from the three-point line and 89 percent from the foul line on the season.
NCC plays at Walla Walla Saturday.
<b>Fisiikava thriving at California Baptist</b>
RIVERSIDE, Calif.: Senior guard Jessica Fisiikava had 11 points, including a pair of three-point field goals, as California Baptist upset 24th-ranked Westmont 84-78 last Saturday in a Golden State Athletic Conference game.
Fisiikava, a 5-foot-10 left-hander who played one year at Roseburg High and two seasons at Umpqua Community College, is averaging 9.4 points and 4.1 rebounds for the Lancers. Shes their second-leading 3-point shooter with 48 treys in 20 games.
California Baptist (13-8 overall, 5-7 conference) lost to No. 1 Vanguard 96-81 Tuesday and travel to Fresno Pacific Saturday.

SANTA CLARITA, Calif.: Former Roseburg High standout Shayla Corder has helped The Masters College womens basketball team to a 12-6 season record and 7-5 mark in the Golden State Athletic Conference.
Corder, a 5-8 freshman wing, is averaging 3.3 points in 15 games for the Mustangs. Shes averaging 10.9 minutes a contest.
Masters defeated Fresno Pacific 70-67 Tuesday and faces Vanguard Saturday at home.

EUGENE: Amy Croll, a Glide High graduate and 5-5 junior guard, is averaging 8.8 points, 4.4 rebounds and a team-leading four assists for the Northwest Christian College womens basketball team.
The Beacons, are 13-8 on the season following a 79-70 loss to Corban College last Saturday. They travel to Walla Walla on Saturday.

<b>Oak Hills to host Winter Best Ball</b>
SUTHERLIN: The Oak Hills Golf Club will be hosting a Winter Best Ball tournament Sunday, Feb. 25, beginning with a shotgun start at 10 a.m.
Two-person teams will compete in the 18-hole best ball format, and prizes will be awarded for gross and net divisions. Total payout is $1,600 based on a 40-team field
Cost is $100 per team and includes green fees, lunch and payouts. A practice round is available for $30 (including cart). Please call for tee times.

<b>U.V. Knights set to hold golf scramble</b>
MYRTLE CREEK: The Umpqua Valley Knights semi-pro football team is holding an 18-hole, four-person scramble on May 12 at the Myrtle Creek Golf Course.
The tournament will be run rain or shine and will feature a 9 a.m. shotgun start. Cost is $60 per player, which includes green fees and golf carts, a hosted lunch and beverage and door prizes.
Proceeds will help pay for equipment, league fees and field expenses for the upcoming 2007 season.
Entry forms can be dropped off at Myrtle Creek Golf Course, 1316 Fairway Drive, Myrtle Creek, OR, 97457. Prizes include net- and gross-scoring for first through third place, a long drive and long putt for men and women and raffles.

MYRTLE CREEK: The South Umpqua Bowhunters Association will hold a pair of shoots in the coming months.
The first will be Feb. 11, with the next one coming March 11. The shoots will be held at the archery range on Dole Road. Food will be available at the shoots, which will include classes for all archery levels.
Cost is $18 per family, $15 per couple, $10 for an adult and $4 per youth.

WINSTON: The Western Oregon University baseball program, led by head coach Jeremiah Robbins, will host a baseball clinic on Feb. 17 at Douglas High School.
The clinic will run from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Ages 9-12 will go from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and ages 13-18 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Areas of instruction include, hitting, pitching, catching and infield work.
Instruction will be done in small groups and includes video analysis, individual skill work and drills.
The cost is $65. Space is limited to 45 campers.
Robbins, a former Douglas High coach and player, guided the Wolves to a host berth in the NCAA Division II West Region tournament last year in his first season as head coach at the Monmouth school. His squad won its sixth straight conference championship, and finished the year 40-16
Robbins will bring assistants D.J. Kooken, Kellen Walker, and Josh Riley, who will assist in the instruction.
