Karla Rickert

Age 48 of Roseburg, Oregon, passed away late Thursday, February 1st, 2007. Karla was born in Texas but moved to Oregon as a small child. She lived in many parts of our great state, growing up mostly in Salem, Oregon but chose to make Roseburg her home for the past 19 years. After being diagnosed with Polymiositis (a rare form of muscular dystrophy) 18 years ago, she decided to fight her body and live the fullest life she could. She bought a home to raise her young kids, and went to college. With her degree she began working for the needs of the disabled in Douglas County, at Umpqua Valley Disability Network. After leaving Umpqua Valley Disability Network she worked at Douglas County Health Department for several years before finally retiring. There are no words to describe who she was, but if you ask her friends, family and neighbors they would tell you she’d forgive and help you any way she could, she had a heart of gold, she lived her life according to the Golden Rule. She was inspiring, beautiful, caring, loved and respected by all who met her. The world has truly lost one of the best examples of pure goodness on faith. To say her family will miss her is not enough for we will honor, love, respect, remember and cherish her great memory for generations. She is survived by her husband of 28 years, Fred Rickert of Roseburg; daughter and grandson, Tonya and Dakota Rickert; son, Dylan Rickert; niece and nephew, Dana and Tyler Allen of Salem, Oregon; sister-in-law, Connie Cowan and nephews, Chris Carroll and Andrea Costa. As well as many other family members in Roseburg, Salem, in Texas and elsewhere. Karla was preceded in death by her brother, Darrell Allen of Salem. She was the inspiration and anchor that kept us all going. She was laid to rest next to her brother, and father, Saturday, February 10th, 2007 at City View Cemetery, Salem.

Anna may (Beebe) Smith

Age 82, of Roseburg, Oregon, went to be with her heavenly Father on Monday, February 12, 2007, while at her home and surrounded by her family. Anna was born on February 2, 1925, in Missoula, Montana, at St. Patrick’s hospital to Leonard (Mike) Beebe and Anna Laura (Smith) Beebe. Anna May was preceded in death by her mother, step-mother, father and three other siblings. Survivors include her loving husband, Glenn L. Smith Sr., of Roseburg, Oregon; three sons, Glenn L. and Beckie Smith Jr .,of Olathe, Colorado; Mike Smith, of Sutherlin, Oregon; James and Debbie Smith, of Gresham, Oregon; one daughter; Jeanne and Dell Turney, of Eureka, California; nine grandchildren and 16 great- grandchildren, spread from Dover, Ohio to Wyoming, California, Oregon and Washington. Anna spent her childhood in Montana and Oregon. Her mother passed away in 1931, when Anna was six years old, leaving Mike to raise her, her older brother, Harry Terou, and younger brother, Chuck. Anna’s father and uncle owned the Missoula Bakery. Three years following her mother’s death, Mike married Lena Elliot of Missoula, Montana. Mike and Lena then ran the bakery for several more years before moving to Portland, Oregon. Anna graduated from Gresham High School. She enjoyed writing and was the feature editor of the Gresham High School paper. Anna continued writing throughout her life, mostly short stories and poems. As did many young people during the Depression and World War II, Anna worked at a variety of jobs to help support her family. Some of those jobs included berry picking, working at the U.S. Bank in Portland and working in the Portland Shipyards. In the middle of World War II, April, 1944, she joined the Women’s Army Air Corps (WAAC). She proudly served her country in Florida, Iowa and Oakland, California till the end of the war. Anna met Glenn L. Smith Sr. in Oakland, California, where he was stationed with the U. S. Navy at the end of the war. They were married in a Baptist church on September 15, 1945. They lived in Oakland, California for three years, where they had their first two children, Glenn Jr. and Lurella Jeanne, before relocating to South Dakota to help Glenn’s dad farm. In 1950, following the birth of their third child, Michael Leonard, they moved to Portland, Oregon. Anna worked several part time jobs throughout her life, but most of her time was devoted to her family. A third son was born to Anna and Glenn in 1959 while they lived in Portland, James Lee Smith. She was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandma and home-maker. Anna and Glenn lived in many locations throughout Oregon, Washington and northern California due to Glenn’s work in the construction business, but they always seemed to return to SW Oregon. Glenn retired in 1984. Anna and Glenn had a knack of making older, neglected homes look like new and that trait served them well throughout their lives. No matter where they moved (and they moved a lot), when you walked into one of their homes, it was homey, neat, warm and had lots of family pictures everywhere. There was always a lot to eat and everyone was welcome. She always loved the Lakeview, Oregon area and wanted to live there, not only for its beauty but also because she felt there would be fewer earthquakes in Lakeview. But Glenn was not as enthused about Lakeview so they remained in southwest Oregon. All three of Anna’s sons proudly served in the U. S. military, two serving in Vietnam from 1966-1970. While that was a difficult time for her, the military was very important to Anna and she was a very patriotic American. Anna loved to take rides in the car, especially to the Oregon beaches. Anna and Glenn drove to Alaska, thoroughly enjoying that trip. Glenn and Anna also traveled to the Bahamas. She dearly loved all her children, grandchildren great-grandchildren and soon to be born, great-great grandchild. Anna loved attending school graduations, boot camp graduations, birthdays, weddings and family reunions around the country. In 1995, Anna and Glenn’s children held a 50th wedding anniversary party for them in Winston, Oregon. Friends and family from all over the country attended. Glenn and Anna were married for 61 years. Anna thoroughly enjoyed her little poodle named Bridget. Glenn had rescued Bridget in a small trailer park while he was working in Idaho. Anna Smith was especially proud of having grown up during the Great Depression and World War II, and having been a part of those hard, lean years. Those years instilled many valuable life-lessons in Anna Smith, as well as millions of other Americans, and she passed them on to her children, not the least of which was her love of patriotism, common sense and hard work. Those life-lessons allowed Anna to share and enjoy many friendships during her lifetime and she was a true friend to many people around the Pacific Northwest, remaining close to them throughout her life. Anna Smith had a strong Christian faith, which she fostered in her children. She attended many churches during her lifetime. Most recently, she and Glenn were members of The First Church of The Nazarene in Winston, Oregon. Everyone who knew Anna May Smith will miss her but, at the same time, will rest easy knowing she is the arms of the Lord and with her family whom she has missed for so many years. She was a true American and made a difference in this world. Anna will be buried at the Veterans Cemetery in Roseburg, Oregon on Tuesday, February 20, 2007. A memorial service to celebrate Anna’s life will follow at 12 p.m., the same day at The Winston Church of the Nazarene, located at 385 Thompson Rd. in Winston, Oregon, (679-9726).
