SUTHERLIN — Call it a puzzling situation for Steve Perkins.

The second-year Sutherlin High baseball coach has a few players in mind who he figures will make a definite impact for the Bulldogs this spring. Where everyone else will fit into the lineup remains to be seen.

“We have who I consider to be the best catcher in the league and three pretty good players who are back from last year,” the second-year Sutherlin coach said. “Where all of the other kids fit, I don’t know.”

Perkins is thankful that he’ll have a chance to find out since the Bulldogs don’t play their first game until a home contest against Pleasant Hill next Monday. That’ll give the Bulldogs a chance to evaluate the young talent which Perkins will depend on this season.

“The nice thing is that this is going to be a really good group to work with,” said Perkins, whose team finished the season 7-17 overall and 3-9 in Far West League play. “They work hard, and they’re there every day ready to work and learn.”

Dane Gilman, who won honorable-mention all-league honors as a catcher last season, returns along with junior shortstop Steven Jaramillo. Kyle Dage, who saw some stellar outings on the mound last season, also returns along with senior outfielder Gabe Anderson-Marquez.

Gilman and Jaramillo, each of whom Perkins said hit close to .375 during the league season, will be asked to provide most of the team’s run production. Dage will likely battle with Jaramillo for accolades as the team’s top starting pitcher.

Anthony Terrel-Perez, a junior pitcher and outfielder, is also expected to put some pop in the Bulldogs’ lineup. Junior outfielder Austin Elliott, junior infielder Josh Beattie and senior outfielder Michael Goulart are also expected to see lots of playing time.

“I think we could be right there in the thick of things near the end of the season,” Perkins said. “Our guys will try to put the ball in play, we’ll be solid up the middle defensively and we have some speed in the outfield, so that’s a plus.”
