Andy Bronson was familiar enough with Graffiti Weekend to know what to expect in his viewfinder -- people waving and hot rodding in antique cars.

So The News-Review photographer searched for a better angle.

And then came the 1959 Chrysler Imperial. Slumped in its back seat were three sleeping boys, ages 2 to 5, leaning to the right and held upright by safety restraints. Through the rear window behind them a motorcade of antique cars could be seen.

This was the new perspective Bronson had been looking for.

"I thought, 'Oh my God, I've got a great photo here,'" he said.

The photograph was one of Bronson's favorites for 2006 and gave him, he believes, a tremendous push to the top of the National Press Photographers Association's regional competition heap.

In early February, Bronson, 41, was announced the NPPA's photojournalist of the year for Region 11.

The region includes photographers from nearly every newspaper within Oregon, Washington, Alaska and British Columbia. Bronson's published photos beat out those of photographers from The Oregonian, The Seattle Times, The Anchorage Daily News, The Register-Guard, The Olympian and numerous others.

Bronson, who started with The News-Review in March 1999, had compiled enough points to be in the region's Top 10 three times before, but he never had made it this close to the top.

"It's nice to know people know you can do good work," he said.

Bronson learned of his top finish in an e-mail while on vacation in Cambodia. A fellow photojournalist from The Seattle Times alerted him to the news. He was visiting former N-R photographer Jerry Redfern and his wife, Karen Coates.

Bronson said the Graffiti photo and a photo of 4-H kids playing cards on the back of a cow lying in hay had received a lot of positive feedback from colleagues.

Jon Austria of The News-Review tied for 16th place in the competition.

Altogether, The News-Review placed 5th overall in the competition. Michelle Alaimo is the third member of the N-R photo staff.

The photographers association compiles points each month for photographers after they have submitted nine examples of their best work from the previous month.

Photographs are distributed within the association and are judged by peers in other regions, Bronson said.

The National Press Photographers Association has 11 regions.

At the end of the year, the photographer with the most points in his or her region is given the distinction of Photographer of the Year.

Bronson finished with 494 points -- 90 points ahead of second place.
