Two students win awards at First Citizen banquet

CANYONVILLE: Brittany Bice and Jillian Butler were both recipients of the Student of the Year Award during the Canyonville Lions Club Citizen of the Year banquet last Friday evening.

Butler, a senior at Days Creek Charter School, has served on the Days Creek Student Council for four years and is currently its president. She has also served as team captain and was voted her team’s most valuable player in her three sports, softball, basketball and volleyball, said Javelin Ormond, her softball coach.

Bice is a junior at South Umpqua High School and president of her class. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Link Crew and has also participated in volleyball and softball.

Bice is caring and compassionate, and is usually the first person to offer help to someone who is upset, said Hannah Mosher, her longtime friend. Mosher was a co-presenter of the Student of the Year Award to Bice, along with Marilyn Chandler, Bice’s kindergarten teacher.
