Jacob Zink pitched a one-hitter with 12 strikeouts as Umpqua Valley Christian remained in first place in the Mountain View Conference Southern Division race with a 9-1 win over Crow Thursday night at Roseburgs Legion Field.
The Monarchs (9-5 overall, 6-1 MVC) scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back, pounding out 12 hits. Zink only walked one and the only hit he allowed was a single by Alan Putnam in the top of the seventh.
Ryan Graf went 3-for-4 and scored two runs, Daniel Schultz was 2-for-2, and Branden Graf 2-for-3 with a double and three runs.
It was a good night for everyone, surmised UVC coach David York. We got every kid into the game.
The Monarchs were scheduled to play at Central Linn today in a conference game, weather permitting.

SUTHERLIN The seventh inning was the turning point in the game in which South Umpqua blew the game wide open, scoring five runs in a victory over Sutherlin Thursday.
Eric Whiteley hit a solo home run in the fourth inning and Bo Younker had a two-run double in the seventh for the Lancers. They managed nine hits in the game, five of those came in the seventh. Kyle Dage took the loss for Sutherlin, striking out nine and walking two in six innings.
They blew the game wide open in the seventh, Sutherlin coach Steve Perkins said. Kyle pitched well, but just ran out of gas late in the game.
The Bulldogs looked to win their first Far West League game today when they hosted Siuslaw in a doubleheader.

FLORENCE The Douglas High baseball team took an early 3-0 lead, but couldnt hang on in a Far West League matchup Thursday.
The Trojans gave up five runs in the third, three in the fourth and four more in the sixth to fall to 1-3 in league play.
The coaching staff didnt do a good enough job of getting the kids prepared to play, said Douglas assistant coach Kevin Shafer. We just didnt compete very well. (Siuslaw) started swingning the bats in the third and after that, the wheels came off.
Jared Stoeffal was 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Robbie Perron added a two-RBI triple for Douglas. Bryson Norton also had an RBI single for the Trojans, who visit North Bend today.

TRI CITY A fast start and good defense helped top-ranked South Umpqua earn the Far West League victory Thursday over Sutherlin.
Katie Bumgarner went 2-for-4 from the plate with two RBIs, while Melodie Bliven and Lindsey Goodson each hit a double for the Lancers. Amanda Hutchings homered and Jackie Gilman had a double for the Bulldogs.
Sutherlin did a good job at the plate. They have a scrappy team, South Umpqua coach Dennis Evenson said. We left a lot of people on base and we didnt do as well the bat. But we played well defensively.
The Lancers (12-3, 4-0) played at Brookings-Harbor and Sutherlin hosted Siuslaw today in league doubleheaders.

Gretchen Owens was dominant in the circle, striking out 10 batters, no walks and only giving up two hits for the Pirates. She also had a double.
Glendale (15-0, 9-0) plays again on Monday against Grants Pass JV.
