Each week, my friend Alicia and I meet at the library for story time with our kids. And before the glue is dry on the construction paper fish/bird/monkey mask craft for the day I announce my favorite four little words: Time for Bagel Tree.
Truth be told, Alicia and I really see library time as a prelude to our own time at the Bagel Tree, known secretly as Mommy Time. Its our little reward each week for getting up with a teething baby (Alicia), taking a toddler to Tumble Bugs (Alicia) and keeping our children as literate as possible with the help of the Douglas County Library system (Alicia and me).
Plus, they have the best Swiss artichoke bagel Ive ever tasted and Diet Pepsi on tap with FREE REFILLS. Need I say more?
So last week we joined a slew of other mommies after story time at the Bagel Tree. Apparently were not the only ones in search of some well-deserved Mommy Time.
Once Alicia and I got our order, we sat at a little table next to six children whose mommies were still ordering.
Just then, a sweet elderly woman came up to Alicia and me and said, Your children are so well behaved as she gestured to the children next to us. Out of the corner of my eye I could see our own children, pulling the decorative faux grapes from the column in front of the window, blowing their straw wrappers at one another across the table and crying out in pain while they pinched one another.
But the six children right next to us were sitting quietly, hands folded, waiting for their orders and staring wide-eyed at our wild children a few feet away.
I had a split second to make a decision: tell the truth or take credit for someone elses well-behaved children. I smiled and said, Thank you.
Hey, I never said we Burmeisters were perfect.
