After their two children were born, David in 1944 and Ralph in 1946, she became a full-time Mom. In 1949, the family moved from Coos Bay to Glide, Oregon, and later to Dixonville, Oregon. After the death of her husband in 1970, at the age of 53, she immediately went out to look for work. She supported herself as a caregiver for the elderly until she was 70 years old. A mild stroke forced Shirley to move back to the area but allowed her to become very close to her granddaughter. She loved and spoiled her as much as possible Shirley passed away on May 8, 2007, at Rosehaven Nursing Home after a 4 month battle with brain cancer. She had good days and bad days during her stay at Rosehaven, but she really loved her "kids" that cared for her and spoiled her.
