ELKTON Warm up your ax-throwing arm and get your chop block in place, the Big K Guest Ranch & Guide Service is hosting its third annual Big K Timber Days Show.
Swinging an ax is not necessary to have fun at this free public event.
Let the 35 or so competitors do the work while children 12 and under fish Big Ks trout ponds for free. Bring a picnic lunch or visit the beer garden and barbecue vendor.
Six main competitive events will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for the show next Sunday.
They include ax throwing, log rolling, hot saw, underhand chop, standing block chop and the single buck, including two intermediate events on the 2,500-acre ranch.
Since its inception two years ago, the Big K Timber Days Show has continued to grow in attendance and expects to draw competitors from around the United States, New Zealand, Australia and Canada this year.

Right now we have a for sure 300, if you include competitors, family members and spectators, said Gary Williamson, Big Ks timbersports director. But I think theres going to be more people than we think.
Williamson, after competing in countless collegiate and professional competitions, realized many professional timbersports athletes from other countries stay in the United States for weeks at a time between Stihl events. So he organized Timber Days to bring lumberjacks and lumberjills already in the region to the Big K ranch.
Williamson, who graduated from Oregon State University last spring and was a member of its logging sports team, placed second overall for the second consecutive year last summer in the Stihl Series collegiate competition in Minnesota. He missed first place in the stock saw event by 2/100 of a second.
Williamson will take aim once again at professional competitors at the Big K show, including Mike Forrester, his coach and mentor, and a Stihl Series pro from Glide.
Im going to see if I cant get him out on a log-rolling event, Williamson said.
Sponsors are being sought to raise $3,000 for top competitors, wholl receive $100 to $20 for first through fifth place in each competition.
Big K also hosts smallmouth bass fishing tournaments and dog-jumping contests.
