Wolves rally past Triad for Skyline victory

DAYS CREEK -- Travis Fuller connected with Rustin Hodgson on a 20-yard touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter, giving the Days Creek Wolves a 28-22 Skyline League win over the Triad Timberwolves.

The Wolves (2-2, 1-1 Skyline) scored off Fuller's second passing TD with one minute, 16 seconds left in the game after Triad had scored to take a 22-20 lead. Senior Willy Johnson caught Fuller's first TD pass, an 18-yard strike.

Johnson finished the day with three catches for 67 yards and Hodgeson made four receptions for 47 yards. D.J. Dunlap scored on a 34-yard scamper in the beginning of the third and Dan Heinz started the fourth quarter by scoring from 2 yards out.

"I praise the kids for their effort," Days Creek coach Jeff Ray said. "They played extremely hard and pulled it out in the end. We dropped a lot of balls tonight, but we got the one we needed in the end."

MOUNTAINVIEW CONF.

Oakland 22

Monroe 14

MONROE -- The eighth-ranked Oakers rallied from a 14-point deficit and knocked off the second-ranked Dragons, the defending Mountain View Conference champion.

Nathan Adams began the comeback with an 8-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. The Oakers (3-0, 1-0 MVC) got a 90-yard interception return for a score from Dakota Mathis and Andrew Young recovered a fumble in the end zone on a two-point conversion attempt to tie the contest late in the first half.

A 7-yard TD run by Trevvor Simmons in the third period turned out to be the winning score as the Oakers shut out Monroe over the final two quarters.

"This win is absolutely huge ... winning at Monroe really bolsters our confidence," said Oakland coach Dallas Amer. "We made some (defensive) adjustments in the first quarter and the kids executed them, and they did a great job of creating those turnovers."

Adam Opoien finished with 214 yards rushing and one TD for Monroe, which lost four fumbles and threw two interceptions. Adams led the Oakers with 66 yards rushing on 16 carries and completed 8-of-13 passes for 84 yards. Young caught four passes for 63 yards.

Amer said Brandon Baumgardner at end, Simmons at linebacker, Mathis at safety and Young at cornerback (three fumble recoveries) had strong defensive games.
